Maitland
Restaurant
bargain of
the year
The town of Wingham recently got a new
restaurant and it's a big addition to the food
fare there.
Until the opening of The Maitland
Restaurant just recently there was lots of
variety if you wanted a hamburger and milk
shake or a pizza but there just wasn't much
range when it came to a comfortable sitdown
meal. And what's more, the Maitland is the
bargain of the year.
Consider the following: two full course
meals complete with extras like soup or juice,
salad, bun and second cup of coffee for only
$6.25...that's for both, not each.
A great deal of effort has been spent in
redecorating the old store that is now The
Maitland. A new arched front was given to
the building and inside it's dark wood and
stuccoed walls and red -carpeted floors...per-
haps lacking the originality of some of the
areas best restaurants, but far above most.
There are two sections: a snack bar style
section at the front and a raised diningroom at
the rear, giving the restaurant a nice varied
feeling.
The menu is wide-ranging but all the
prices,(rising to the $6.00 range on top cut
steaks)were exceptional. We chose the pork
tenderloin with apple sauce for the lady and a
half spring chicken with dressing for the man.
Adding to the pleasantness of the decor
were some of the most attractive waitresses
we met in recent dining occasions. Not only
were they attractive in their red tops, black
pants and red bandanas on their heads, but
they were extremely friendly and skilled, not
bad for a restaurant so newly opened.
The lady chose the soup of the day which
Is Almost Here
Time to get your
was chicken with rice. It came piping hot from
the kitchen and quite good. Next it was the
chef's salad, a small portion but quite enough
considering the rest of the meal. The bun
came unwarmed.
The lady's pork tenderloin was breaded
and the large portion took up the biggest part
of the attractive plate. It was accompanied by
good crispy french fries and green beans,
lettuce and a slice of tomato.
The half chicken too was a hearty serving
It was tender and very tastey with the real
chicken flavour coming through unlike so
much of the fast food chicken served these
days which might as well be rubber. The
dressing was a pleasant surprise, spicy and
very tastey.
But alas, the Maitland falls into the same
trap of nearly every restaurant in the area.
Why, oh why in the middle of the summer
when fresh vegetables are plentiful and
inexpensive do we have to get limp, watery
canned green beans. It's a disgrace all
restaurant owners should be ashamed of, But
let's not crucify The Maitland because 95 per
cent of the area restaurants are guilty of the
same thing.
The meal was filling enough that we didn't
get a chance to sample the dessert menu but
hopefully it's of the same high quality of the
rest of the food.
The restaurant is open seven days a week
with dinner menu served from 11 a.m. to 8
p.m. Drop in if you're in the mood for a nice
inexpensive meal. With good food, good
decor and good service you're not likely to
find a better bargain around
