Village Squire, 1976-06, Page 23to Cape Merry from where Fort Prince of Wales, built in 1770,
can be seen on the opposite bank of the Churchill River, a
mile away.
After a day and a half at Churchill, the next stop is The Pas
for an overnight stay and a visit to the Little Northern
Museum, with its collection of northern objects and artifacts
associated with the Indians and early trading days.
The Anglican Church in The Pas has hand -carved pews and
the Ten Commandments in the Cree language.
Next morning, a bus goes to the mining community of Flin
Flon, 94 miles away, for an overnight stop. The group returns
to The Pas the following day after lunch at Cranberry Portage,
and the Train returns to Winnipeg early Saturday morning.
THE POLAR BEAR EXPRESS
The Polar Bear Express, operated by Ontario Northland
Rail Services, takes passengers on an exciting train ride down
the Arctic watershed on a one -day return trip from Cochrane,
Ontario, 460 miles north of Toronto. Fare is $16. for adults,
$12. for children.
The excursion train takes tourists through territory that still
belongs in spirit to the fur traders of 300 years ago.
The end of the line is Moosonee, more that 100 miles
beyond highway's end. All along the line, the Express will
stop to let hunters off and Indian trappers on.
It also stops for animals on the tracks.
Lumberjacks, missionaries, miners and geologists are
among the regular travellers.
Moosonee, population 1,000, is on the banks of the Moose
River, about 15 miles from the salt waters of James Bay.
It is one of the last frontier towns and is inhabited by
rugged men and women who live off the wilderness.
Moose Factory, a short canoe ride from Moosonee, is the
site of the second Hudson's Bay Company trading post, built
in 1673. The post is still in operation and some of the existing
buildings on the island go back to the early 18th century.
The settlement has a museum telling the story of the fur
trade.
The Anglican Church has a beaded moosehide alter cloth,
Cree-language prayer books and wooden plugs in the floor.
If the tidewaters of James Bay get too high in the spring,
parishioners just pull the plugs. The water bubbles up and
keeps the church from floating away.
Fossil Island, also in the Moose River, is worth a visit since
it yields fossils of the Devonian period, more than 350 million
years ago.
After six hours in the Moosonee area, the train heads back
toward Cochrane, 186 miles to the south.
Before reaching their final destination at Cochrane,
passengers have a chance to view several interesting sights
such as the Onakawana lignite deposits, the immense Otter
Rapids hydro dam and the Island Falls power dam.
Free parking is available adjacent to the Cochrane station
and there are several hotels in Cochrane for visitors wishing
to stay on.
A five-day tour by motor coach north from Toronto, and
Polar Bear Express from Cochrane is also available.
THE ROYAL HUDSON
The 80 -mile round trip to Squamish from North Vancouver
follows the eastern shore of Howe Sound. The route is
bordered by water on one side and towering mountain peaks
on the other.
Once known by the unromantic name of Steam Locomotive
No. 2860, the Royal Hudson on the Squamish excursion is the
largest steam locomotive in use on the continent.
It is a member of the famous 2800 class, known as Hudsons
because they were used extensively along the Hudson River,
in the U.S.A., although they were built in Montreal.
Her sister engine, No. 2850, powered the royal train that
