of star Maggie Smith, box office records have
been tumbling at The Stratford Festival.
The impressive stable of Stratford stars
such as William Hutt, Pat Galloway, Martha
Henry, Nicholas Pennell, Douglas Rain, and
many more, is augmented this year not only
by Miss Smith, but by international stars like
Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy.
The season is long: beginning June 7 and
ending October 16 featuring 10 plays in the
three theatres as well as various concerts.
Hamlet opens the season on June 7 at the
Avon stage. Two different actors, Nicholas
Pennell, and Richard Monette alternate in the
title role, giving two entirely different
versions of the part. Pat Bentley -Fisher and
Pat Galloway also alternate as Gertrude.
Robin Phillips and William Hutt direct. Also
in the performance are Eric Donkin, Michael
Liscinsky and Marti Maraden.
William Congreve's restoration comedy
The Way of The World opens over at the
Festival the same evening. A much admired
philanderer traps friend and foe alike in a
series of romantic entanglements, all to
further his own cause with the woman he
loves. Miss Smith makes her first appearance
at Stratford here along with Miss Tandy,
Qomini Blythe, Jeremy Brett, Alan Scarfe
Robin Philips and William Hutt team up as
directors again for the The Tempest, opening
at the Avon stage June 8.
Mr. Hutt also stars in the magical
Shakespearean romance along with Pat
Galloway, William 1 Hutt, Marti Maraden,
Richard Monette and Nicholas Pennell. The
old magician Prospero sets all wrongs right
and makes sure that true young lovers will
live happily ever after before leaving his
enchanted island to join the less certain world
of men.
