Theatre starts
film club
Those who like classic movies of the
by -gone era will have a chance to see them
relived soon in a new film club organized by a
Wingham theatre operator.
John Schedler is an old film buff himself
and so the club is not only another way for
him to keep his Lyceum theatre busy, but a
way to enjoy films himself The club, called
the Nickelodeon Film Club will be a
subscription series of six movie nights.
Among the films in the series are The
General, with Buster Keaton; D.W. Griffith's
classic Birth of a Nation; Flash Gordon
Conquers the Universe starring Larry Buster
Crab; Charlie Chaplin's Gold Rush; Super-
man and Douglas Fairbanks in Mark of Zorro.

VanEgmond's work
a success
THE IMPORTANCE OF LIBERTY:
BY FRED VAN EGMOND.
"May controversy, contemplation and
wonder always be linked with the subject of •
Anthony Van Egmond." With this sentiment,
Fred Van Egmond of London sums up a
narrative of the life of his great-grandfather
The story follows Colonel Van Egmond
from his battles as a soldier during
Napoleon's era through his struggles as a
leader of the settlers in Upper Canada's
Huron Tract, now known as Huron and Perth
Counties, to his death as a rebel against the -
Family Compact.
Although the government confiscated his
13,000 acres of land in the Huron Tract, his
widow and eight children managed to rebuild
the Van Egmond dynasty. Today the last
remnant of this dynasty, a mansion in
Egmondville, is being turned into a "living
museum" - a fitting memorial to a colourful
trail -blazer and to the pioneer way of life.
"The Importance Of Liberty," published
by the Huron Expositor in Seaforth in 1975, is
another memorial.
The author explains his reasons for writing
the book: "Awareness of our heritage gives
us a sense of pride and acts as a stimulant. If
my efforts result in bringing to focus a clearer
picture of the struggle of the pioneers in the
Huron Tract...and of the restoration of the old
house in Egmondville, I shall indeed be
pleased and consider the work a success."
After reading "The Importance Of
Liberty," I assure Mr. Van Egmond his work
is a success.
