Village Squire, 1976-05, Page 20students. No, equal is not the word, I felt
superior as I had age and wisdom on my side.
When we finally settled into the knitty
gritty of things I realized my efforts would
haye to be applied to the math field. A genius
in Arithmetic I was not. Well, so I'm a little
weak in spelling too..., dictionaries were
created for people like me.
As the weeks rolled by and the homework
increased and the debit and credits in
bookkeeping almost starting to balance I
began to question the system. Why should I
spend three hours looking for $1.58 when
you're talking of a trial balance of $24,000.00?
TI'Ink of the extra wage& that has to'be spent
looking for such a measly amount. My
method is much simpler. When I lose $2.00 or
$3.00 in the family budget I just acknowledge
the spiraling prices on food and write it off as
inflation. (Idecided to contact Simpson's as
they might use the idea and save thousands of
man hours.)
The typing class began innocently enough
but then I developed a personality clash with
the machines. Every Friday we would have a
timed writing and I plunked away at that
resentful, typewriter and ended up looking
like a translater for the Rpssian Embassy.
The young bloods would ,Shatter boostfully
about their speed and proudly carry their
sheets up to be marked. I, feeling like a lady
wrestler among Prima Donnas mustered as
much dignity as possible and turned mine in,
always knowing the reaction from the
teacher. The "Oh Dear me but you'll make it
yet" look.
What has gone wrong? Have the years of
helping to clean horse stables and refinishing
our beloved antiques taken its toll and my
fingers are no longer adapted to the gentler
art of typing] Tim®wilt tell so I prodded along
as best I coutd.
Meanwhite, back at the house, the meals
bt*ane lousier and the rooms dirtier and my
laundry schedule consisted of grabbing a
shirt and socks from the wash basket. My
family never rebelled Openly but I detected
many sour expressions at meal time. I started
to miss T G`' acid your chess games and
evenings of complete freedom of doing
nothing
I began to. question my decision of higher
learning; wondering if perf haps 1 had become
too set in.my ways. After a short debate with
my conscience, I quit
I am nota back t "The Ofd Ways Are the
Best Ways" routine and. my balancing
between the stligar bowl and cookie jar is still
working perfectly. (1 decided not to contact
Simpsons so they'll just have to make do
without my services )
I have started to catch ,up on my
correspon'dente and I am still using the
proper rttetfiod. Writing a letter by hand is far
more personal and projects a persons image
much better than told typewriter print. •
Are you wondering if I have the feeling of
failure. after drispping out of school? I would
highly recommend school to any housewife
feeling the need to express herself. I can
almost guarantee the satisfaction and success
she'll feel when she quits -and goes home
