A Middle-aged Dropout

After 25 years I finally decided to go back to
school. What prompted this extraordinary
idea could be an ;accumulation of many
thoughts - middle age, woman's lib, children
grown, who knows? Maybe I just wanted to
learn a new trade in life so I could point my
finger at the family and say "see"!
I was excited and of course the family was
stunned into silence, unable to believe that
Mother could cope with such an undertaking.
I was determined to prove to them I was
a capable individual regardless of years in the
kitchen and being mother hen.
Opening day was fascinating. The subjects
were outlined by the teachers and fully
discussed. I would become an accomplished
bookkeeper and balance books for the
greatest. Typing would also be taught and
that would be a breeze as all you need to know
is the key board. I could hardly wait to begin.
The first week was spent adjusting and
getting to know your way around. I felt so in I
considered new clothes to go with the new
me. I finally disregarded the ideas as I was a
little paunchy and besides what would my
kids think?
The new environment was stimulating and
I felt on equal ground with my fellow
