and the Family Compact.
As a last resort, Van Egmond joined
MacKenzie's rebels in an ill-fated attack on
Toronto in 1837. He was subsequently
imprisoned and charged with treason, but he
died of pneumonia before his trial. Although
he received an official pardon from Britain, it
arrived too late to save his life or to prevent
the government from confiscating his
property. Fortunately, his wife and sons
possessed deeds in their own names, and
with these land -holdings, they rebuilt the Van
Egmond dynasty.
The only remaining remnant of this
dynasty is the mansion now under restoration
in Egmondville. The structure exemplifies the
Canadian vernacular interpretation of
Georgian architecture, popular in Upper
Canada during the nineteenth century.
