Two young women have big future ahead
Erna an Daele and hem Murch
Many writers wait a long time to taste their
first success. The mythological writer, like
the mythological artist, starved in a garret
before the public finally discovered the
hidden talent.
Today's young generation is making a
shambles of the old myth. Younger artists,
younger poets, younger authors and younger
playwrights are making names for them-
selves. Among the latter are two young
London ladies who, from their early success,
seem to have a bright future ahead of them.
Kem Murch and Erna Van Daele teamed
up last year for a musical comedy revue called
Straitjackets. The show was inspired by
International Women's Year and was
performed at University of Western Ontario's
Talbot Theatre for four nights. The sellout
opening night crowd shouted author, author.
The show was revived, with the help of
government grants, for a tour of southwest-
ern Ontario this year. It was rewritten and
restaged under the direction of well-known
Canadian writer -performer -director Dean
Reagan. Following the tour the show
reopened in London for a two week stand at
Centre Stage in the City Centre Mall.
Ms. Murch, a poet, and Ms. Van Daele, a
musician teamed up to present a look at the
male-female role structure of our society. The
name comes from the fact the authors see,
men and women put in straitjackets by the
roles demanded of them by society.
The show is particularly popular with
younger people and the high school audiences
during the school tour were most apprec-
iative.
The theme isn't particularly new or
startling but it is told in somewhat novel
ways. Music is a strong part of the show
thanks to the talents of Ms. Van Daele. A
three-piece orchestra of piano, guitar and
drums provided the accompaniment during
the recent tour and perhaps provided a little
too much gusto, often making it hard to catch
the intricate lyrics of the tunes. There was
little variety in the music either, nearly all
being upbeat, making it hard for the
performers to get their message across.
The show has a running time of about 80
minutes without intermission and the music
often seems more plentiful than the skits. It
could perhaps stand some more humourous
skits between the music.
But in general, audiences seem to think it's
great and they're the ones who count. The
show is the centrepiece of the spring season
of Centre Stage. Both ladies are also involved
behind the scenes with the theatre and are
getting to know all aspects of the business. If
they continue to learn they appear to have
bright futures in the business.
