supporting walls were installed to strengthen
the floor
The floor itself had to be removed from the
area where Sunday school classes had once
been held at the back of the church when
engineers found it was Just too weak
When the floor was removed temptation
came to Joe Mandel. The result, he said, was
an impressive room, 20 feet wide by 40 feet
long with a great vaulted ceiling 40 feet high
He could see visions of a great baronial dining
room, he remembers But the space was
needed too much elsewhere so reluctantly,
the floor went back in Now there are three
levels in the 40 foot height, with a
preparation kitchen in the basement, the
main kitchen on the main floor, and a quiet
little dining area hidden away like a loft above
the kitchen The room which still isn't
completely finished is furnished with large
replicas of antique tables made by Auburn
craftsman Ernie Niblock. The room can be
used as over flow for the restaurant in the
summer and has become a gathering place for
Festival actors.
Unseen, but expensive additions to the
building were new plumbing, new wiring and
a fire -protection sprinkler system
Once the renovations were underway, the
lob of lining up the staff tor the new venture
began Actually it had begun a long time
before when Mr. Mandell, still in England,
had spoken to Jean Marie Lac mix the Chet at
the London Hilton about his idea to start a
place of his own M Lacroix was interested
so when Mr Mandel returned to i ngland last
year to officially emigrate to Canada he talked
