Art
ZARSKI.PERIOD, London Art Gallery,
March 6-29:
This one-man exhibition of fifteen recent
paintings by Bob Zarski a young London
artist, has been organized by Kate McCabe of
the London Art Gallery. Bob Zarski received
his artistic training at H. B. Beal Secondary
School and has exhibited extensively in the
London area for the past two years.
The painting in this exhibition represent
Zarski's personal interpretation of natural.
elements and phenomena. However, rather
than being a realistic record of these
elements, in the paintings natural imagery
takes a space-age journey into the fantastic. A
fanciful landscape is created with layers of
brilliant colour applied with almost explosive
energy. Volcanos, tornados, gardens and
waterfalls are formed with dots, dabs, slashes
and shapes of intense colour highlighted by
gold, silver, and often rhinestones.
Because objects are incorporated onto the
painted canvas, the viewer becomes involved
in a visual illusion. At a distance, the work
seems to be only two-dimensional painting on

canvas, however upon closer inspection,
these three-demensional objects, cleverly
camouflaged, become apparent. The catalo-
gue for the exhibition, ZARSKI.Period is
itself' a work of art in that it contains a
reproduction of a painting created by Zarski
specifically for the centre -fold.
SELECTIONS FROM THE MOORE COLL-
ECTION, London Art Gallery March 6 - 29:
This exhibition is a selection of 83 works
from the generous gift of over 350 paintings,
drawings, prints and sculptures recently
donated to the Ontario Heritage Foundation
by Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Moore. The Ontario
Heritage Foundation has, in turn, agreed that
this collection will be housed in the new
London Art Gallery when the building is
completed.
The works of art in the J . H. Moore
collection represent many years of careful
personal investigation and choice by the
Moores. As a result, the pieces are
characterized by individually and a high
standard of quality.
The selection exhibited at the London Art
Gallery spans the various historical and
artistic styles of this century in Canadian art.
For example, works by the historically
significant landscapists, Emily Carr, Lemoine
Fitzgerald and David Milne, and members of
the Group of Seven, Jackson, Lismer
MacDonald and Varley are hung alongside
contemporary paintings by Claude Breeze,
Yves Gaucher and Kenneth Lochhead. The
local history of art in London during the 60's
is well chronicled with pieces by Jack
