AD.
His influence and the influence of those
who succeeded him are found in the part of a
Roman wall that has remained, the Norman
castle keep, and in the timbered buildings
and inns, the Georgian homes and old
churches.

Thetford, population around 5,000, once
the capital of a little kingdome, which lies in
the centre of Norfolk's flat, forested

Bury St. Edmunds, noted for its 14th

Norman abbey, its 15th Century cathedral,
and its 18th Century houses;
Sudbury, lined with timbered frame
houses;
Ely, 15 miles from Cambridge, a small
town clustered around its magnificent
cathedral, an ancient magificent cathedral, an
ancient structure which appears to soar out of
the marshlands, and the Fens, where
Hereward the Wake fought against Norman
invaders;
And, of course, Cambridge, seat of
learning. From the Great Court of Trinity

in Bridge Street, Suffolk.
College, the largest university court in the
world, walk to the Backs, along the banks of a
river overhung by weeping willows and filled,
in spring and summer, with punts.
There can be no flitting through
Cambridge, through Trinity, in whose New
Court Newton felt the weight of a falling
apple; through the Wren Library, filled with
rare first editions; through King's and its
chapel, begun in 1441 and finished when the
War of the Roses ended half a century later.
