I could hardl% believe my eyes There were seats for at least 150
persons There %%as white linen on the tables. A red carpet ran
the full length of the gymnasium floor from the doorway to the
ministers seat at the head table. The high school band was set up
at one end of the hall and greeted the minister with a fanfare.
There was another platform at the other end of the hall obviously
set up for a dance band. A crowd of smartly dressed people
milled around. Many, I recognized as party faithful from the local
organization. There was the mayor, the high school principal and
even Hopkins, my boss.
The dinner went well. The beef was perfect. The baked Alaska
for dessert was delicious. As 1 swallowed the last of my whine I
•realized guiltilty that I'd forgotten all about my photography
class. When I looked up in the gallery along the south side of the
gym, however, I didn't have to worry. The whole class was seated
there watching avidly Even the curvaceous nude model just
couldn't compete with an event that was taking on the
proportions of the filming of the chariot race for Ben Hur.
Sometime through the whole thing, 1 caught a glimpse of Harry
Howard beaming quietly on one side, like a good civil servant
standing aside and letting his boss take all the attention.
As the Minister droned on in his "few" words after supper, I
couldn't help doing a little figuring on the napkin. Dinner for 150,
two bands, wine etc. etc. etc. would bring the cost of the bicycle
that. was being awarded to about $8,253.35. But I had to admit it
was an affair that the people of the town, not to mention young
Mervin McEvan would remember for a long time.
Finally, the Minister stopped speaking. Harry Howard
signalled me silently to come forward to take pictures now.
For a moment, I panicked. I'd forgotten the film. But no, it was
there in my coat pocket, the roll of film I thought I'd left behind
when I changed at home.
It wouldn't have mattered, however, if I had forgotten. As I got
ready to take the pictures I saw the Minister's face grow red, and
Harry Howard's face get black. Mervin began to cry.
Somebody had forgotten to bring the bicycle.
