Village Squire, 1976-01, Page 15Water? Don't we have our own well? Sure, we have our well,
but the water supply is not inexhaustable, her husband
explained, as only a know-it-all haughty male chauvinist could
say it.
She didn't believe him. Well, she didn't believe until the day
the well went dry.
Well, well, well, he, know-it-all said, when she told him that
evening that there wasn't even a bucket of water for the calf.
Humans can go thirsty, but not a calf. He borrowed two barrels
of water from a friendly neighbor who made no attempt to conceal
his amusement at the situation, a stupid stranger had allowed to
develop.
Anybody on a farm knew about water.

Eventually they had their own drilled well. It solved the
flushing problem.
Settling into a rural neighbourhood, after living in a Toronto
suburb, wasn't the easiest job in the world.
It was simple for the male chauvenist. He just ambled off to
London without a care in the world.
Mother became the kitchen maid and the all-purpose chore girl
- which meant cleaning the stable.
She soon learned how to teach the children about forks - those
in the barn, not at the table. So eventually she had some help.
The exhilaration of life on the farm was exhilarating only for
weekend visitors and would-be poets.
The farm was about 90 acres with house and barn. The
children, of course, could not dream of a barn without a calf and
pony. Buying them was easy. Then the children learned that they
had to work.
Most of the 90 acres was rented out for grazing land. One pony
and one calf didn't require all that space. But they did require
cleaned stalls.
So the children learned some of the basics of culture - the type
of culture which develops in a manure - compost combination.
It - culture - was an entirely new subject and they talked about
it incessantly, even at the table.
