Village Squire, 1976-01, Page 13stormy night content in the feeling there's no necessity to go out
in the storm. It's a feeling the family of years gone by used to feel
often. Those were days when the entire fall's work went into
preparing for winter. When the winter winds blew you were
secure in the knowledge that your woodshed held enough wood to
keep you warm until spring, the fruit cellar was full of,preserves
and there were enough fruits and vegetables for many a month.
The household was almost self-sufficient and no matter how bad
the weather got you were secure.
Strangely though we have so many more comforts and
conveniences today, we are much more vulnerable. Few people
have more than a week's supply of food in the house at a time,
though the freezer has helped the situation out. The majority of
homes depend on fuel, oil for heating and the truck may not
always be able to get through. Electrical failures are another
worry. We cook wifh electricity, we use it for lighting, we heat
with it and even those homes that don't use it for heat are still
susceptible because of electical fans on furnaces. Today we make
few preparations against emergencies and so leave ourselves
open for more worry than we need have.
So it is our lifestyle that is most wrong, not winter. If we are
willing to mold our lifestyle to the climate, then we'II live a
reasonably comfortable, enjoyable winter season. If we insist on
trying to pretend we're no different than our heros in California
then we're letting ourselves in for a lot of misery. But if we relax
and prepare ourselves for the worst of winter, enjoy the best of
winter and stop feeling sorry for ourselves, we can save ourselves
all that money we spend trying to escape winter in southern
climes.
