A funny thing happened on the way to our ski holiday.
BY CARMAN SEATON
Why is it that some people can go
through life with such polish and finesse in
everything they do and others thump over
life's unforgettable moments with the
precision of. a broken down watch?
My best laid plans always seem to stray
and develop into such situations I
sometimes wonder what I originally
intended to do.
Take for example our trip to the
mountains. We were living in France at
the time and my husband discussed taking
the family to a small village near the Alps
in Switzerland for our Christmas holidays.
Wow! a vacation where the elite of Europe
go and I'm going too!
I planned my wardrobe for weeks and
kept my old. sewing machine working
overtime. Painfully I stuck to my knitting
needles and my husband was presented
with a beautiful sweater that didn't quite
fit but which he dutifully admired. After
much consideration and rejections I had
decided on who's to wear what and then
concentrated on my appearance.
This was a one time splurge and I
wanted to look like what I was going to bF,a
woman being pampered by her husband

and enjoying it immensely.
I gave myself a home permanent and
applied a special creme to the special
wrinkles and did push ups to get the trim
look again. I forgot about the hands, they'd
never whiten in time and besides I could
always cover them in gloves.
As 'the week approached we were all
excited and last minute preparations were
double checked. More happy news, our
dear friends were also going and we and
the children would have companionship as
well as the excitement of the new
environment.
On a typical drab December morning in
Paris we locked the gates to our temporary
home and started on our venture. One
hundred miles out we had a flat tire. No
problem, we had a spare and I was positive
that "the car" would behave herself now.
("The car" belongs in a story by itself so
I'll fill you in as briefly as possible.)
We bought her brand new and naturally
thought she would adjust to our standards.
