Another part of Christmas is the tree.
Many stories say it' was first common in
Germany and was popularized in England by
Prince Albert more than a century ago. Any
plant that remained green during the long,
cold northern winter was sacred in pagan
days - another custom given new Christian
significance. (Did you know that one sect in
Canada will not celebrate Christmas at all
because they believe it is a pagan custom?
What pleasure and inspiration they miss. And
their poor children!) A few years ago, I spent
an evening with a German friend. She had a
tree with real candles, and part of the time we
had no light in the room but the soft,
flickering candle light. It was restful and
delightful. Our use of holly, ivy, mistletoe and
evergreen decorations goe back to many
northern European countries. I love these real
decorations, but I think the artificial ones are
horrible.
Another old custom is going from house to
house singing Carols, or like the Salvation
Army, singing on street corners. In either
case, a small donation for the needy is
expected. Years ago, a group of children in
Southampton went to the home of a teacher
who had been ill for several months, and sang
Carols outside the house. It was one of his
most precious. Christmas gifts. One old
custom was drinking from the Wassail bowl,
containing a special beverage. Each member
of the household was greeted individually,
and as the merriment mounted; the horses,
oxen and other important animals were
included. A few years ago, a small group
went to Sunnybrook hospital to sing Carols to
