Village Squire, 1975-12, Page 30to' tell us that the Light of the World has come. Another part of Christmas is the tree. Many stories say it' was first common in Germany and was popularized in England by Prince Albert more than a century ago. Any plant that remained green during the long, cold northern winter was sacred in pagan days - another custom given new Christian significance. (Did you know that one sect in Canada will not celebrate Christmas at all because they believe it is a pagan custom? What pleasure and inspiration they miss. And their poor children!) A few years ago, I spent an evening with a German friend. She had a tree with real candles, and part of the time we had no light in the room but the soft, flickering candle light. It was restful and delightful. Our use of holly, ivy, mistletoe and evergreen decorations goe back to many northern European countries. I love these real decorations, but I think the artificial ones are horrible. Another old custom is going from house to house singing Carols, or like the Salvation Army, singing on street corners. In either case, a small donation for the needy is expected. Years ago, a group of children in Southampton went to the home of a teacher who had been ill for several months, and sang Carols outside the house. It was one of his most precious. Christmas gifts. One old custom was drinking from the Wassail bowl, containing a special beverage. Each member of the household was greeted individually, and as the merriment mounted; the horses, oxen and other important animals were included. A few years ago, a small group went to Sunnybrook hospital to sing Carols to Jt 7 for c the gals on your l.hristi>•uYs LINGERIE - GOWNS - PYJAMAS - SLIPS Open All LEATHER CLOVES - HANDBAGS - SCARVES - SWEATERS HOUSECOATS - LOUNGEWEAR PANT SUITS - SEPARATE SLIMS - SHIRTS & SETS EVERY GIFT ATTRACTIVELY BOXED (For (male) Customers, We Giftwrap Free) MILLER'S LADIES WEAR Mondays in December WINGHAM 6ERRARD$ The Square GODERICH, ONT.
