Mendelssohn Choir Sing -Along Messiah to
which we take our own music and sing many
of the choruses with the choir under the
direction of Elmer Iseler. The Choir and four
soloists do the rest of Handel's mighty
masterpiece.
Many Carols and Customs date back to
pagan days. In some cases they were given
new significance with the coming of
Christianity. Back in the days of the.
sun -worshippers, the twelve days surround-
ing the winter solstice were times of revelry
and celebration because the short days were
ending and the longer days beginning with
the return of the sun from mysterious
underworld. My favourite 'fun' Carol is The
Twelve Days of Christmas which is repeated
like Old McDonald Had a Farm. It starts 'On
the first day of Christmas my true love sent to
me -
1. A partridge in a pear tree.
2. Two turtle doves.
3. Three French hens.
4. Four calling birds.
5. Fiv# gold rings.
6. Six geese a -laying.
7. Seven swans a -swimming.
8. Eight maids a -milking.
9. Nine ladies dancing.
10. Ten lords a -leaping.
11. Eleven pipers playing.
12. Twelve drummers drumming. Can you
imagine the fun and confusion when you get
to the last verses and repeat all the others in
reverse order? I hope you hear it or better
still, have a chance to sing it. Most secular
