Benny Be!! was ashamed of his flat tones.
agreed that they didn't hear anything amiss with Benny s tone, but when
they tried to ring "Joy to the World", Benny's voice again sounded dull
and blurred.
The bell ringers went home puzzled, and promised one another to think
hard as to what might be the trouble. Benny and the whole family hung
silently in the grey church steeple, and they all felt sad and worried, for
they did wish, with all their hearts, to ring out clearly and joyfully on
Christmas Day for the village folk who were so proud of their famous
chimes. -
Now, on that very same evening, Baldy, the elf in charge of all the horns,
whistles, drums, and bells in Santa's workshop, was having a very serious
chat with Santa. "What's to be done, Santa?" worried like Baldy, who hacl
worked for Santa for a good many years, and had lost most of his hair
"Here we are with a good stock of horns and drums, -even toy pianos and
mouth organs, and scarcely any boys and girls have written to ask for one of
them. It seems they just don't want to make music any more." And poor
little Baldy twisted his leather apron in his clever hands, and wrinkled his
small brown face.
"You're right Baldy," said Santa, stroking his long white whiskers
thoughtfully, "I believe that children not• adays are too busy playing
records, or watching television. We'll have to change our line of toys a bit
Tell you what, Old Boy, you just come along with me on my Christmas Eve
trip this year, and we'll see if we can get a few new ideas."
The thought of going along in Santa's sleigh cheered Baldy a little, but
still away down in his heart, he felt that nothing he had done lately was
going to make anyone happy, and that all his work for the past few months
had been a waste of time. However, when Christmas Even came, Baldy put
on his bright scarlet jacket and his tall pointed green hat, and climbed into
Santa's big red sleigh, carrying his little bag of precious tools, which he
always took wherever he' went.
The night was clear and frosty, and as the sleigh, drawn by the magic
reindeer flew through the sky, Santa and Baldy heard many church bells
ringing down upon the earth. As- they passed over the grey steeple where
Benny Bell lived with his family, the bell ringers were once again trying to
ring the Christmas carols, and each time that they sounded Benny's note 11
was still dull and untrue. Baidy's quick ear, accustomed to tuning up
whistles, horns and drums in the workshop, caught the discord at once
"My goodness, Santa," he exclaimed, "whatever is wrong with those
bell ringers! Or perhaps It's the bells that are off pitch," he added quickly
"Like to stop over and find out?" asked Santa, who understo6d hoss
much the discords would bother Baldy. "If so, we'll just drop you off here
and pick you up later in the trip."
So little Baldy, who loved to use his keen ears and clever hands, was
dropped off on the, tall church steeple. With his handy tool bag, he
si rambled like a little squirrel into the bell tower. After tapping each hell
