Village Squire, 1975-12, Page 15the furniture and have a real old fashioned
square dance. To the music of a violin or
piano, dancing would go on until midnight
when coffee made in an old fashioned boiler,
would be served to one and all. The writer_
recalls one such occasion when a cake of
laundry soap had been left in the boiler and
the result was very sudsy coffee indeed.
However, dancing went on until another
boiler full of coffee had been prepared.
Sandwiches, cookies, cake and tarts would be
served after which dancing would be resumed
and continue almost until dawn. People
worked hard in those days at their play as well
as at their work.
New Year's Eve, like Christmas Eve, was
generally given over to a religious service at
midnight. A sleigh would come down the
road, picking up everyone along the way, and
although the services were generally solemn
affairs, the sleigh rides were a great source of
merriment.
New Year's Day, rather than the night
before, was the time for cel. brating,
especially if one's ancestors had come from
Scotland If the MacDonald's had spent
Christmas with the Smith's, then the
Mc Donald's felt honor bound to have the
Smith's over for New Year's Day, although,
generally speaking, the New Year's Day
celebration was not on as grand a scale as
Christmas. Finally, the old year and the
celebrations drew to a dose. Children were
tucked snug in their beds to dream of
Christmases to come but for father and
mother, they awoke to another year's toil with
little hope of a break before. another
Christmas rolled around.
