forced to raise some prices because the store
has been "discovered" by collectors. When
he started out he had little knowledge of what
books were valuable to collectors, he says.
He's quickly learning though as he watches
people grab a valuable book and walk out
chuckling with the book under their arm
which they bought for a pittance.
Most of the customers, however, aren't
collectors and are very devoted to the little
shop. Many come in two or three times a
week. Bernie carries a little notebook when he
goes out buying books with the names of
books people have asked him to try and
locate.
Although the store is now bulging with
between 20 and 25,000 books either on the
shelves or in the back storeroom, he usually
can tell a shopper if he has a book or not
because he looks at•each book's title and
makes a mental note as he unpacks each new
acquisition.
Like most people who are hooked on books,
Bernie caught the disease when a child. He
grew up in a small Quebec town of only about
200 people. "There wasn't much to do e' cept
