Book Review
Ho For The Klondike captures
the
glory of the gold rush in pictures.
Probably no place in Canada holds so much
romance as the Yukon.
The great gold rush of the turn of the
century stirred the imagination of the world.
It holds special impact for Canadians because
not only was it in our own back yard, but it
was the most recent of the great gold rushes
and as such was chronicled both by many
writers and by the magic of a relatively new
invention of the time, the camera. Indeed
there is even some rare, jerky early movie
footage of the event.
Ho For the Klondike captures much of the
imagery of the period making heavy use of
the pictures that the photographers of the era
worked so hard to take. The quality of the
photos is amazing considering the fact that
cameras in those days were bulky to carry and
hard to operate and that weather conditions
were often horrid. We can be grateful to the
early photographers for taking the effort,
however for now we have a visual record df
those exciting times and the tough bunch of
men that made the Klondike the centre of the
world for a scant two years.
Pictures are the primary portion of the book
and the actual reading material can be
consumed in a few minutes. The words are
just enough to explain the pictures ... or
almost enough. We had a bit of a complaint
that the text sometimes didn't work hard
enough to explain the pictures. Another
criticism is that there are quotations in the
text which are not attributed unless one looks
at the back of the book where he finds out that
all quotes are from Pierre Berton's book
"Klondike". It would be nicer if the author,
James B. Staton had tried to make things
easier for the reader.
On the whole though, it's a very enjoyable
book for any reader and for someone who's
hooked on the history of the Klondike, this
pictorial story is a necessary inclusion in the
collection of books that have been written
about the exciting place and time.
