Productions brought raves ...
of anger
C.B.C. Sunday night Performance drama series has run into
some hot opposition. Ironically, the three productions which have
the heaviest heat have all had local ties.
The heaviest hate mail (or telephone calls) received by the
C.B.C. was over 10 Lost Years, the adaptation of Bary
Broadfoot's best-seller about the Depression years in Canada.
One of the main cogs in the production, writing the adaptation,
writing music and performing, was Cedric Smith, former
Brussels -area resident. C.B.C. received 349 hostile calls
compared to 35 in favour.
The Farm Show, adapted from the. stage show built around
farm life around Clinton drew 60 unfavourable calls to 8 in favour.
Baptizing, the play taken from the novel by Alice Munro, a
Wingham native and featuring Mrs. Munro's daughter in a nude
scene drew a 100-40 adverse call ratio. It would appear that those
who phoned in were more displeased with bad language than
with nudity.
Toronto Globe and Mail television columnist Blake Kirby said -
he was "shocked and disgusted" by the public reaction to the
plays. The typical reaction among the callers seemed to be: "It
was filthy, disgusting, I'm shocked the C.B.C. would allow this,
we'd rather not have Canadian productions if they're like this."
In a later column, Kirby observed that reaction to shows from
the U.S. or Britain didn't seem to be strong but Canadian shows
provoked violent reaction. He. concluded people seemed happy
enough to see others do it but didn't want to see Canadians doing
the same things. .
Frankly, we thought Ten Lost Years stunk in its television
version and The Farm Show was a sad remnant of what was an
ekciting stage show. The only one of the three that seemed to be a
success was Baptizing. But our judgement was on a strictly
entertainment basis, not on the language used.
WOMEN'S COMMITTEE CHANGES NAME TO VOLUNTEER
COMMITTEE OF THE GALLERY/STRATFORD.
The Women's Committee of the Stratford Association received
approval at a Board of Trustees meeting to change its name to the
Volunteer Committee of the Gallery/Stratford. A change of name
was needed for two reasons. Firstly, it was felt that more and
more men are becoming involved with the gallery and the name
Volunteer Committee would be a more appropriate umbrella for
their involvement. Secondly, the name change fused the
identification of the committee's activities with the
Gallery/Stratford, thus avoiding confusion between the Stratford
Art Association as an association and the Gallery as the
institution in the publics' mind.
The Volunteer Committee will continue to arrange a social
events for members of the Gallery and visiting groups, senior
citizen tours, to serve as docents and to assist as receptionists at
the Gallery. Fund raising will also continue to be an important
part of the Volunteer Committee's 'concerns'. It is hoped that
men in the community will become much more involved in such
large projects as the Festival of Arts and Crafts.
Funds raised by the Volunteer Committee assist the Art in the
Schools project, sponsor free Saturday children's art classes, free
classes for teens on Thursdays, provide additions to the
permanent collection and purchase equipment for the Gallery, as
well as providing two annual Scholarships to deserving art
students in the.Stratford area. Present planning is concentrating
on: a luncheon and fashion show at the Waterlot Restaurant; New
Hamburg, March 18 and 19; a bridge in the gallery on April 2; a
used art auction in May and the fourth arfnual Festival of Arts
and Crafts, July 11, 12, and 13. 0
