counter isn't being used it changes shape and
becomes another piece of equipment, and
then changes again to give space for drying
film.
There didn't used to be a full basement but
there is now, thanks to some hard work, and
as usual a bit of ingenuity on the part of Art
Carr. He dug out the basement by hand, but
saved time and effort by building a sort of
minature mine railway which automatically
transferred the earth outside once he had dug
it up. The basement, of course, now is full of
machines including a welder and a metal
lathe. He says proudly that he expects he has
the only weekly newspaper in the country
with such equipment.
But though he's proud of his gadgets and
his machinery, it's still the end product, his
newspaper, that is his pride and joy. Those
pages are guarded jealously. No news but the
news of Palmerston will find it's way into this
paper: no syndicated columns, no press
releases, no information items from the
ministry of agriculture. Just news and
pictures from Palmerston and his own
editorials.
Those editorials have gotten him into
trouble in the past and will in the future.
They'd probably get him into even more
trouble if it wasn't for his wife who tries to
tone down some of his bolder pieces.
When I visited him this month he was in
trouble again. It was only Friday and already
he had two letters to the editor delivered to
his office over something he'd printed in the
paper. But after nearly 40 years, if there's
one place Art Carr probably feels most
comfortable, it's up to his neck in hot water.
