Gracious dining spot
Queen's Hotel, Stratford
For some time now discriminating
acquaintances in Stratford had been saying
that the best place in Stratford for dining was
The Queen's Hotel and so one night early this
month the receiver decided to test their
judgement. We weren't disappointed.
The Queen's on both the inside and the
outside shows the grace of times past without
the slightest tint of shoddiness or decay. The
outside is neat and attractive and lobby
combines the warmth of rich wood panelling
(none of your modern veneer) and
comfortable, furniture of classical design.
The dining room seats about 60 and gives
you a feeling of casual grace. You'll feel
comfortable here whether you come in formal
dress as one large party nearby did, or in
more casual attire as did the reviewer.
We were met at the door by a handsome
young man casually but neatly dressed and
led to a small table for two, well laid out with
silverware and a linen tablecloth. He tilled
the water glasses before leaving and then left
us plenty of time to peruse the menu after
delivering drinks from the bar.
A waitress took the order: grilled salmon
steak for the gentleman and New York cut,

sirloin steak for the lady.
The soup was cream of inushroum soup
with plenty of sliced mushrooms. The
reviewer, not normally partial to mushroom
soup, enjoyed it thoroughly. A tossed salad
followed combining lettuce and spinach for a
little different taste.
The soup and salad, combined with the
basket of warmed buns had the diners already
starting to feel satisfied before the main
course arrived. The plates came with ample
servings though were not crowded. The meat
and fish servings were accompanied by
oven -browned potatoes and fresh broccoli and
carrots smothered in butter. It made an
attractive plate and it soon proved to be as
good tasting as it was appealing visually.
The small, whole potatoes browned in the
oven were so pleasing both in appearance and
taste that one wonders why more restaurants
don't serve them rather than the usual frozen
french fries or mashed potatoes from a mix
The fresh vegetables were also a delightful
change from a run of the mill restaurant. The
steak was delicious as was the salmon. The
steak was such a generous portion that the
