time on a new book for which she has received
a Canada Council Horizons grant. She says
she will either call it "Does it come in
paperback" or "Off my feet and up to my
neck in hot water".
The book will be a sort of guide to people
who would like to start a bookshop. Many
people, she says, have the idea that a book
shop would be a great business to start as a
retirement business. They have the idea, she
says, that one just sits and reads good books
between customers and that all the customers
are charming and will want to buy the best
books. She thinks these people should be
given the real storyof running a book store so
that they are going into business with their
eyes open. The bookwill be based on her own
experiences. It is not enough, she says, to
love books. You have to know the book trade.
The general lack of bookstores in Canada
bothers Mrs. Stafford. The large chains, she
says, find it profitable to establish their book
stores only in the larger cities, and certainly
not in a city of less than about 75,000
population. Thus the only exposure most
people in smaller centres have is a stationer
who maybe carries a few books.
"The problem is that there are thousands
of people all over Canada, and all over the
United States .Irm sure too, who never have
access to a bookstore unless they make a visit
to a larger city. In fact I think it's a problem
either the Canada Council or the government
is going to have to face one of these days.
They are interested in promoting a greater
awareness of Canadian writers. Well, you
promote this awareness by helping the
writers, by helping the publishers, but
somewhere along the line there has to be
some help for that middleman, the
