Dining out at
THE VICTORIAN INN
by Muriel Trott
The main room at the Victorian Inn,
Stratford, although large and airy, exudes a
warmth and coziness conducive to relaxed
conversational dining. You may enjoy such
specialties as broiled lobster tails with lemon
($7.50), frog legs saute Provencale ($5.75)
from the 10 entrees offered. We found the
food good -the Saturday evening we chose to
dine at the Inn which is located in the
north-east part of the Festival City.
We decided on breaded veal cutlets ($5.75)
and filet mignon ($6.75). Soup du Jour, a
cream tomato, was only ordinary, but the hot
sesame rolls and the relish tray were
appreciated. The latter' consisted of pickled
beets, cottage cheese, sliced dill, radishes,
carrots and celery - obviously provided for the
calorie counter. A tossed lettuce salad was
also ordinary - but we were offered a choice of
four dressings.
Breaded veal cutlets victorian were topped
with ham, swiss cheese and tomatoes. The
veal was tender, as it should be and it all was
satisfying. The filet, served with mushroom
caps, as usual, proved to be the dining -out
classic. It was tender, tasty and attractively
served -and cooked to the degree ordered.
Four or five potato choices were offered,(I
took baked) and the vegetable of the day was
garden peas. The coffee was reasonably
good.
The dessert trolly looked tempting, but due
to a little tardiness on the part of the service
at this particular point (Why? -we have
experienced this elsewhere) and perhaps an
awareness of the time on our part, as we had
a later appointment, we were forced to
decline.
28, VILLAGE SQUIRE/MAY 1974
• In the background was low music and while
we dined a CNR express train, comprised of
only a half dozen or so cars, whizzed by --
surprisingly not too noisily. Its quick
appearance-- and disappearance on the west
side of the dining room, which is all glass,
was like a quick shot on a large color TV
screen- and it was somewhat of a novelty to us
and the other guests. The train runs on a
track some 100 feet or so away -above the area
rugged with Tush green grass. (Fortunately
for the motel, the track is used only during
the daytime and only twice a day.)
Our service was excellent- and we were
greeted graciously by an accomodating
maitre d'. Our bill came to $14.30 plus
gratuities. Dessert was extra. Dinner is
served each evening from 6 to 10 p.m. and the
a la carte lunch from 12 noon until 2 p.m.
Reservations will probably be appreciated -
and most likely necessary once the festival is
in full swing.
Started.18 years ago by a prominent young
Stratford realtor, Lloyd F. Drummond, (it has
had seven additions since then), the 120 room
fully licensed motor hotel with its number of
dining rooms is the answer not only to- the
festival patrons, but to the . many sales
meetings and conventions held in this small
city. During the festival, the Inn serves
smorgasbord and a la carte to 500 up to 1800
guests daily.
When you dine at the Victorian Inn, go a
little early and visit the boutique shop. It is
near the entrance, and the beautiful imports
are well worth looking at. Lloyd's wife,
Eleanor, has her finger in this phase of the
business.
