Wally's World Hello! Wally Worm here! I've just been leaning out of my apple tree taking in some deep breaths of spring air! Wild worms couldn't drag me back inside. About the only season that's comparable is late summer. That's when. I wallow in the apples this lovely tree grows. Ah bliss! Spring does have its drawbacks however. What with dodging the early sparrows, and starlings, and those sneaky frosts, then that Pe -sky robin arrives back from his vacation and figures I'm his prime meal. A worm sure gets tired of wriggling away from trouble. Then there's the apple sprays. My, my, my, the sprays! We worms are getting wily. however. I have what's known as a worm spray shelter. (Many of us haJk. them.) Anyway, we watch from our watchtower in our trees (or books, etc.) and at the first whiff of spray----whamo! We worms are off and wiggling to our spray shelters deep in the tree. All over the county --the province! Waves of worms waiting in their shelters for the sprays to pass! I gives one a 'sense of security. There is safety in numbers you know. Since it is spring, I'm waiting for a visit from Enid. She's an earthworm, and a good friend of mine. She's also one of the most winning witty worms I know of. Oh, if I'd only been an earthworm....Anyway, each spring she usually undulates up here to.say hello. Enid's very travelled. Why last year she made it all the way out to the end of the lane, and sent me a card that said "wish you were here...". I've heard she's had several floodings though, and so she's rather late this year. I'll wait for her. We worms are nothing if not faithful. I've discovered a new wrinkle in the apple skin. My beloved apple tree is tilting! Oh help! This probably means a move to Aunt Winnefred's. She's the most adorable annelid you know, but she's so absent-minded. remember last summer. She almost got herself eaten! Oh it was terrible! You see, Aunt Winnefred's tree sits in the remains of an old orchard. She's quite happy there. It's peaceful, and no one bothers her, (except the robins. Boo to the early bird.) Well, last year, her tree put out a healthy load of apples, and she was in such a dither. ONT. MURRAY GERRIE (Something like a dog in a bone museum.) She chose a lovely sun -warmed spy to climb into. A perfect place to munch you know. I'll be darned if a bunch of joy -riding, sight-seeing humans didn't happen along, and decide to pick those golden globes --so they wouldn't go to waste, mind you. Well sir, before you could say warbling orioles Aunt Winnefred's temporary home was pulled from the tree. She bumped up and down, and hit her head when they shone up the apple. Then all was quiet. She was just worming up the courage to have a look, when, with a roar of a volcanoe, these huge white, tomb -stone -looking things came crunching into Aunt Winnefred's hole. Well now, I tell you ---she I...,t about lost her head --literally! Anyway, the shock was mutual, and the human dropped the apple, Aunt Winnefred with it of course, and she's still in a mild state of trauma from it. As it is, I'd rather not visit her for a while, as much as I do love her. It looks as though I'll have to call the tree proppers in. Such a bother! If they can't win for me, and it's really serious (like a hollow -middle in the tree), then I guess I'll have to find a new residence. Oh well, we worms just sort of work our way along such catastrophies. Well, maybe I'll write you next month and let you know who and what wriggles by here. 'Till then, watch where you walk!
