Village Squire, 1974-06, Page 11The old-time architecture of the Stratford Library....
the big opening, past the flower beds not yet
a mass of bloom as they soon will be, into the
big, tree covered park, nearly empty now, but
soon to be humming with picnickers. Past
Conestoga College,with the winds whispering
in the huge pines outside.
No, Stratford is more of a grown-up small
town than a big city. I remember when it was
....and contrasting, across the corner, the new' architecture of the
Victoria and Grey Trust building. _
THE big city for me. As a youngster growing
up on a farm, visiting Stratford to visit
relatives was an awe-inspiring thing. THIS
was a city. It was another world, so strange.
No open fields. J ust row after row of houses.
Just the word city was a little frightening.
And all the names...like Romeo St., Juliette
Street...they all sounded so grand.

Well, Stratford doesn't seem so big now,
but it's still grand. It has the best of both
worlds. It is still small, open, friendly and
clean and quiet, yet it offers the kind of
big -city life that few cities five times its size
have: like the theatres and the kind of
sophistication they give, and excellent book
stores and fine restaurants.
It's enough to make half the world jealous._
