Village Squire, 1974-01, Page 24Dining at the Commercial Hotel, Seaforth is interesting by Muriel Trott Rodgers and Hammerstein said it: There is nothing like a dame. Restaurant regulars have their own version: There is nothing like a steak. The licensed dining room of the historic Commercial Hotel on Main Street, Seaforth offers a three -course meal ranging from a fluffy omelette for S1.75 to a T-bone steak for $4. After all the rich fowl we consumed over the recent festive season, the T-bone was our choice for Dining Out in early January. Piping hot vegetable soup, served with soda crackers ar.-1 a fPeshly baked roll, was followed by a tossed salad. The T-bone (cooked exactly to the degree as ordered) was aged and tender - and served with sauteed onions. A choice of French fries or mashed potatoes and steamed carrots comprised the vegetables. A decision on my part to skip the rich gravy on the mashed potatoes - because • of the calorie count - resulted in them being served drooling in butter! The dessert list which included pie or ice cream at first looked rather uninspiring after such a satisfying meal. Our resistance to say 'no' was still low from the Christmas season - and so we weakened to find the pastry -made in the hotel's own kitchen, to be absolutely mouth-watering. The coffee was good, and the bill for the two persons totalled $8. The menu lists A La Carte Tight lunches, with hot sandwiches at $1.35 and sandwiches at 45c to 65c. It is one of the few eating spots that one can find a cup of coffee or tea at 15c. Dinner is served from 6 until 8 p.ni., six days a week. May we advise you to phone in advance prior to eating out on Sundays as not all restaurants - or hotel dining rooms - are open seven days a week. The Commercial does its fair share in catering to banquets in its small dining room which seats about 45 persons. We found the atmosphere relaxing and homey and noted with great relief that the service was not hindered in any way because of the adjacent bar. Joe Czerwinski bought the hotel, which was built in 1895, when he came to Seaforth from Toronto centennial year. When you choose to dine at the Cohmercial - go through the main <•ntrance and in the lobby examine the beautiful rare antique wall clock with its brass pendulum. It bears the name of W.R. Counter who was a Seaforth jeweller around the turn of the century. (His son Norman has continued to carry on the business in Clinton). The clock is well worth seeing.
