Lucknow Variety AND DRY GOObS Robert Struthers CARPENTRY BOB, AilApILENE, SHARON and CINDY LUCKNOW 5i8:4238 Byjennifer Cranston The best Christmas ever All the stores were open late, and Kate and her best friend Judy were doing last minute Christmas shopping. The only pre- sent Judy had to buy was one for her boyfriend Cliff. All she had left from her allowance was $40.00. Sure it seemed like a , lot of money, but the present Cliff got for her totaled $50.00. Kate still had to buy a present for her older brother and her steady boyfriend. The girls walked through the big mall., and when they were done they both had spent more than they intended, On their way home they were talking 'about Christmas and what they hoped to, get, While walking down to Judy's house the girls heard a silent sob. When they looked through the window they saw a girl sitting on her bed crying. They knocked on the window and asked the girl why she was .so sad. She explained to them that her dad had lost his job and they wouldn't have any Christmas dinner or presents. When the girls heard this they froze in their tracks. No presents! They began to imagine that their dad had lost his job and therefore would have no big Christmas. After telling Beth everything would be okay, therleft. Kate and Judy walked home in silence. Then all of a sudden Kate. exclaimed, "I know, we could buy everyone in her family a present and give them a big dinner!' This seemed like an excellent idea to Judy • and both decided to talk to their parents about their idea. • After both Judy's and Kate's parentS had heard their idea, they set to work right away. They went to Beth's home and found out she had one younger sister and two younger brothers. After they had their visit, they went out Christmas shopping. The small town that they lived in was nothing but well-to-do people. Now there was one family who wasn't doing very well. After they had bought all the presents, the two families went to Kate's . home. They were all drinking hot chocolate when Kate announced that they could surprise Beth's family. They would go to the McDonald house 011 Christmas day'around 11:30. They would put the presents and food on the doorstep, ring the doorbell, and run to the side of the' house. On Christmas morningKate came downstairs to , an excited family. After breakfast they opened their presents because Joy, Kate's little sister couldn't °wait. Meanwhile at Judy's house the same thing was going on. Everyone was very happy with what they received„ At 1:00 p.m. both families went to the McDonald's house with the presents and food. They put the stuff on the doorstep, rang the doorbell, and left just like they planned. They all stood peeking around the corner. When the door was opened the look of surprise warmed everyone's heart. Both the McDonald's and the, two families beside the house knew this was the best Christmas ever. •• Nanda Guichelaar Japanese poetry Syntu — Japanese style of poetry consisting of five lines Shepherds"' Dirty clothes, and a staff in one hand.
