naitivity scene is done very secretively as
the children are not allowed to see the
Christmas tree until the coming of the
Christkind on Christmas Eve.
As is tradition in Germany, Christmas
Eve and the corning of the Christkind is a
very. strict family .occasion, with visitors
at the hone strictly taboo.
"On Christmas Eve, in families with
small children, nobody comes to visit as it
is considered not polite. Everyone stays
with their own family," said Mrs. Ritgen.
Farmers also have a tradition to follow
on Christmas .Eve. Before thecorning of
the Christkind, the animals are fed a.little.
extra and the stables are kept extra clean
on that day.
"The farmers db that before Christmas
is celebrated in the house," offered Mr.
Stoeker, adding that the hunters also go in-
to the forest in the afternoon and leave
food for the deer, rabbits and pheasants.
Christmas Carols are •usuallysung by
the German families during the afternoon
of December 24. Mrs,. Ritgen says a
_ number of traditional German carols are
sung that were originally German and
later translated to English, including 0
Christmas ,Tree (0 Tannenbaum), Silent
Night (Stille Nacht) and 0 Come All Ye
Faithful (Oh Kommt All Ihr Glaubigen).
As it nears 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve, a
bell will ring signifying that the Christkind
has come. Then, the children can go into
the room to see the Christmas tree for the
first time and open their presents They
are allowed toplay with their toys until
dinner is served. Some families, says Mrs..
Stoecker, will have their Christmas before
the coming of the Christkind.
At midnight, German families will at-
tend Midnight Mass.
For a traditional German Christmas
meal, Goose is served as the main course,
but turkey is usually served as the main
course in southern Germany. The meal in-

cludes stuffing and gravy, red cabbage,
potato salad (with vinegar instead of
mayonaise) and apple sauce. For dessert,
special cakes called `Christstollen", much
like Christmas cake, and gingerbread -like
cookies called "Speculazien" are served.
In some cases, German families will
serve fish, • usually carp, for their main
Christmas dish. • •
"Since the carp live in the muddy water,
you have to have them swim in the bathtub
before Christmas," said Mrs. Ritgen,
During the holidays, German families
enjoy serving wine to their.house guests: A
special festive wine drink called "Giuh
wein" is traditionally served which con-
tains wine, sugar cinnamon, cloves, apple
or lemon juice, allspice and water. It is
also heated before it is served, says Mrs.
Ritgen.
On First Christmas Day, on December
25, German families will meet with close
relatives for the day, and again they will
have a large dinner.
The Second. Christmas Day, families will
go on long hikes in woods, skiing and just
an overall family day.
"We usually go for logn walks and play
with the children. If the weather is bad, the
children will play games inside. We like to
walk off those . two dinners we've had
before," said Mr, Ritgen. •
W The last event of the Chrsitmas season
occurs on January 6 and is called Three
Kings Day. The Three Kings of the bible
are then added to the naitivity scene under
the tree. Also, the altar boys from ' the
church will dress up as the three kings and
go to each house in the German village,
said Mrs. Stoecker.
On each house they willpmake the follow-
ing with chalk on the top of each .door:
"C+M+B-1987" which represent the
names of the Kings.
"The message will be left on the door un-
til the kings come again," said Mrs. -
Stoecker.
