Two candidates running in West W.wanosh election At the closing off nominations on Oc- tober 27, two candidates are in the runn- ing to fill the vacated councillors posi- tion in the upcoming by-election in West Wawanosh Township. Kathy Todd of RR 2 Lucknow and Joseph Hickey of RR 3 Auburn, both of whom . have served on the council before, are .vieing for 'the council posi- tion left after the resignation of Jim Ait- chison as reeve and the subsequent ap- pointment of Councillor Cecil Cranston to the position in September. • Mrs. Todd, the mother of three who works full-time at a local business, said she : entered the by-election because of her interest in municipal politics. She had served a three-year term as a coun- cillor on West Wawanosh council, before being defeated in a close vote for the reeve's position by Mr. • Jim Ait- chison in .the -1985 municipal elections. During her term in council, she also served on the arena board, the .joint recreation committee and the Huron County Safety Council. . As for any aspirations if elected, she ,said realize -the finish -Of the secondary plan" proposed for the township. She was;inivolved with.the,in- itial stages of the plan -when she, was•a member of council. ' In terms of planning for the township, Mrs. Todd says some park space should be found in the township, for families to "gather for picnics". She said other surrounding townships have parks of this nature except West Wawanosh. She also said she doesn't feel the plans . for the proposed, new arena for Lucknow should be "shelved", but other means of funds should be looked into, including a new arena lottery. She also the municipalities involved with the arena should continue to solicit help from the 'Ontario government. "If you keep after the politicians, they'll do something for you,". she•said. She says experience on the family farm, working for a local business and her past municipal council experience would be an asset to the township. The other candidate Joseph Hickey, when contacted by the Sentinel last week, refused to comment on the up- coming by-election. - Voters in the township will go to the polls on Monday, November 17 at one of three .. polling = stations: The Senior. itizen°s Centre,` . Dungannon; the Auburn . Vmage Hall, and Library; and ''the St: Helens Worneres Institute'Hall. The "polis wilfbe open from 11 aln td 8 p.m. funding on track By Alan Rivett - Officals connected with the• proposed $3.5 million expansion and renovations project to the : Huron . County Pioneer Museum are breathing a sigh of . relief after governmentofficials accepted a new funding formula for the project. The .new funding formula, passed by Huron County Council' at its meeting. on' November 6, calls for the museum project to be completed intwo distinct phases, -with the County and the provincial govern- ment each contributing 50 per cent of the $2.4 million cost for firstphase construc- tion. The second phase will be completed as money becomes available. The original funding plan, adopted last year by Huron County Council, had the county, provincial and federal govern- ments each contributing one-third each to the project whichwas slated to go ahead in one phase. • Museum Committee Chairman Dave Johnston said the project was, put in jeopardy last, week after the. County's 1 million grant application through the Federal government's Cultural Initiatives. Program (CIP).was declined. In turn, the County's grant, application under the provincial Ministry of Citizen- ship and Culture (MCC) was also placed in jeopardy. The provincial ministry refused to approve the one-third funding proposal by the county after learning of the federal government announcement. Mr. Johnston said the committee recent- ly met with Mrs. Marty Brent, the manager of the lViuseunn' section of the MCC, to discuss an amendment to the ap- plication which, would allow the county to stay as a top priority for provincial fun- ding. She recommended to the committee =that the project and the application be made up of two phases. "She (Marty Brent) gave us every assurance that the county museum project would be top priority and that our applica- tion would not have to be re -submitted but • only re -worked," said Mr. Johnstonin ex= plaining the situation to council.' Under the new formula, the first phase would include allnew construction while the second phase would include renova- tions to the old museum building and the finishing touches to the total project, such as landscaping, etc. Mr, Johnston also said that after the new Turn to page 2 Lottery The 50th draw of the Lucknow and District Arena Complex Lottery was held on November 10.
