Many special prograrns planned at Day Centre
y Pam Williams
The Day Centre for the Homebound con-
tinues to provide social and recreational
day programs for older adults in northern
Huron and southern Bruce Counties.
This local day centre belongs to the
OACA(Older Adults Centres Association
of Ontario). The associations annual con-
ference will be on November 13 and 14 in
Orillia. There is a large network of Day
Centres across Ontario including such
places as Ottawa, `Toronto, Barrie,
Woodstock, St. Marys, Hamilton, and our
two local centres, Clinton and Wingham.
Day programs for older adults are
becoming more pops alar as our population
ages and home support services become
equally important to help senior citizens
stay as independent as possible - in their
own homes.
Special programs at the centre this
month include a continuation of our in-
tergenerational programing.. The tern
"intergenerational programing" is defin-
ed by Kathy Durst of the Waterloo Adult
Recreation Centre when she published her
provincial government booklet on the
same topic.
"Intergenerational programs help
dispel the myth that the older population is
a homogeneous group of dependent, sick
and senile persons and that all younger
persons are wasteful, irresponsible and
disrespectful."
Educational and recreational prgrams
have traditionally separated the young
and the old. To change this situation, the
Grade 11 Family Studies class at F.E.
Madill Secondary School are -studying a
unit on aging and. they were guests at the
Centre to discuss how the teenage lifestyle
has changed over the years. Topics includ-
ed school, dating, family life and
marriage.
The results of this program might, be
concluded by saying that, although some
things have changed, senior citizens and
teenagers still have a great deal in
.common. '
This month, four students from Mrs.
Lang's senior class at Sacred Heart
Elementary School in Wingham will be
volunteering at the Centre to learn more
about one of their community programs.
Thank -you to everyone who supported
our fund-raising efforts' and purchased '
cookies from our volunteers, participants
and staff. A special thank -you to the Young ,
Peoples Group at the Brussels Mennonite
Fellowship Church who boosted our cam-
paign.by combining efforts with "eir own
fund-raising.
The Day Centre is administered by a
volunteer Board of Directors made up of
representatives from the community. A
reminder to our board members that the
next regular monthly meeting is on Mon-
day, November 17 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Please note the time change.
A safety seminar for seniors will be held.
in St. Thomas on Thursday, November 0
and senior citizens representing this area
will be ccompanying Bob Wittig,
Wingham's C i'ef of Police, to the meeting.
•For results of this seminar and crime
prevention for seniors', please call 357-1445
and we will pass on any new information.
A workshop focussing on the needs of the
community will be held in Clinton on
Thursday, November 20. Gaps and
overlaps in services wil be discussed and
more informnation will be published in the
near future regarding the workshop. The
Day Centre's Annual Craft and Bake Sale
will be held on Thursday, November 27
from 3, p.m. to 7 p.m. Handicrafts and
delicious homemade baking will be the
features for the sale.
If you didn't participate in the Mystery
bus trip in October, you're probably
wondering where was our final destina-
tion. Our local tour included a look at the
beautiful colors of Turnberry and Culross
Townships, a stop at the local creamery in
Teeswater, a delicious meal at a local
restaurant in Teeswater and a chance to
purchase apples, cider, etc. at an apple or,
chard near Brussels. The bus trip was
organized to prove that we don't have to
travel out.of.the area to enjoy the autumn
colors and terrific food. We tend not to ap-
preciate our own community until we
leave the area.
One last thought to leave you with is
PLEASE CLIP AND
SAVE FOR FUTURE
REFERENCE
SPECIAL
from the Ontario Governments' boo et on
Intergenerational Programing.
"The magnitude and scope of recrea-
tional programs have changed rapidly
over the last 25 years. The older person to-
day has little in common with his or her
counterpart in 1958, Today's older person
is healthier, possesses a higher level of
education and is more economically
independent."
