Ontario Agriculture Minister Jack Riddell
have already established a joint task force
to expediate amendments to bring it up to
date so it is more useful.
He said changes could be made *over-
night, but it would be highly unlikely that
any changes would be made retroactive.
: ev Hill, spokesman for the Huron farm
committee, said the presence of Mr. Wise
in Huron County indicated his concern
about the crop situation in the area.
"We're confident there will be some
benefits to this. area," Mr. Hill said. The
farm group had not expected the federal
agriculture 'sinister toshow up with a che-
que book for some immediate assistance,
he said.
Mr. Hill said he felt the response given
the farmers was "quite favorable" and he
was optimistic that :some form of
assistance would be„ forthcoming.
"Hopefully, it will be provided in time," he
said,
He also said the farm group would
definitely be talking with Mr. Riddell.
The brief presented to Mr. Wise in-
dicated that the economic disaster "is of
•
proportions that have never been ex-
perienced before " 'It also claimed the
need for financial support in some situa-
tions is desperate.
The brief stressed that disaster relief
should be targeted to those farmers who
can demonstrate financial need.
Assistance 'must come, the brief said, in
the form of relief from losses incurred with
the 1986 crop and the assurance• of a supply
of operating capital for 1987.
"It is impossible for us to fully describe
the magnitude of this economic
catastrophe," the brief said. It noted that
growers could lose 60 per cent or more of
their crops and receive nothing from in-
surance. In the case of vegetable growers,
the loss could be up to 50 per cent and the
grower would receive less than his
premium cost.
The farmers also complanined that
coverage is only :a portion of the cost of
production. The program is •complicated
and difficult to understand, they said, and
those making claims are penalized.not on-
ly' with reduced coverage, but with in-
creased premiums.
