Clays welcomes student back
from summer in Yukon
By Melanie Wylds, Jason Cameron and
Adrian Rau
Grade 5 Portable 1 welcomes Brent
Gammie back to their classroom after a
summer in the Yukon.
This week, they read the "Three Billy
Goats Gruff" story and made stick pup-
pets. They also helped make apple sauce.
It was good!
Two guests
Mrs. Ottewell's Grade 3 -Class had an ex-
citing week with two guests; Mrs. Deb
Heslinga, from Board office, who taught
the children to write creatively using the
SCAMPER methods, and Mrs. Graham,
art -co-ordinator, who taught a lesson on
drawing people. They also had a hot dog
lunch with special desserts sent by Mrs.
Faber, Mrs. Daer and Mrs. Dawson.
Block and Tackle
Mrs. Tebbutt's Grade 6 class had Mr.
Wilkins visit their classroom in Science
period to show them how a block and
tackle is used. Mr. Wilkins could pull Mrs.
Tebbutt across the room with a block and
tackle!
Book Four Poster winnersrom Mrs.
Tebbutt's Grade 6 were: fitst prize -
Heather Jefferson; second prize - Barb
Nivins and third prize - Adrienne Schultz.
Congratulations!
First reader
Mrs. Mather's Grade 1 class are
thoroughly enjoying .their first readers.
Each day they are busy making pictures
and letters to their friends. They mail
those in the classroom post office.
This year they have paired off with Mrs.
Scott's Grade 4 class for buddy reading - a
o time anxiously awaited by the Grade 1
pupils.
Soccer action
Brookside has now completed their
senior soccer house leagues. Team 1, Deb-
bies Destroyers, and Team 2, Ilakkers
Crakkers, have tied for first place. Con-
gratulations, to members of both teams.
All four Brookside soccer teams travell-
ed to Goderich on Friday, October 10 for
the annual soccer tournament. All teams
played very well. The senior and junior
girls teams brought home a pennant.
Volleyball
The senior volleyball try -buts begin next
week for the November volleyball
tournament.
Cross -Country
On Octoer 16, Brookside's cross-country
teams attended the annual cross-country
meet. All runners ran an excellent race
despite the cold and wet weather. The
Midget boys team placed first in their divi-
sion, bringing home the pennant which is
displayed on the bulletin board. The school
BROOKS IDE
a
also had three individual winners in their
respective divisions. Eric Andrew was
first in the Midget boys while Warren An-
drew was first in the Intermediate boys.
Joyce McWhinney was first for the In-
termediate girls. Congratulations to all
team members!
Monsterss
Mrs. Clarke's Grade 3 is slithering
through its monster theme, reading and
writing all manner of "monstery" things.
It has been extremely difficult because the
room has slime hanging everywhere. On
Friday, the class made super -ugly papier
mache monsters by working in groups
with the help of Mrs. Joan black and Mrs.
Monique Sleeker.
The class has also begun an individualiz-
ed reading program, adding to the
bookworm on the wall as they read and
write about the books they select. The
bookworm is growing!
This week for "Introducing", the class is
introducing Joseph Buchanan.
Brookside Volunteers
A very special part of Brookside through
the years has been the Volunteer Pro-
gram, co-ordinated by Mrs. Mary Bere,
the school resource teacher.
Mothers, fathers, grandparents and
other members of the Brookside communi-
ty have become a sharing link between
home and school, helping to make so many
"extras" possible.
Brookside volunteers have been seen do-
ing some or all of the following from time
to time: listening to youngsters read, carv-
ing pumpkins, making wallpaper "books"
for young authors, cooking hot dogs, tram-
ping through the bush, talking about farm
safety, mixing up wallpaper paste for
papier mache, recording dictated stories,
helping with centre activities - and
sometimes just being the person with time
to share for a smile and a hug.
This year, Brookside welcomes Marie
Webster, Brenda ,Wylds, Judy Smyth, Bev
Weaver, Joan Black, Chaudia Baskerville,
Celia Aitchison, Connie Black, Monique
Sleeker and Karen Webster as volunteers.
PD day
Friday; October 24 is a Professional
Development day for all Huron County
teachers. Elementary teachers will be at-
tending workshops in Exeter. Students will
not attend classes on that day.

Nile wins slow -pitch title
By Duane Rivett
In a rain -soaked Dungannon ball dia-
mond, the final game in the Lucknow-
Dungannon Slow -pitch League "A" cham-
pionship between Nile and the Lucknow
Six -Shooters' was played on Tuesday, Oc-
tober 14.
Nile 5 - Lucknow 4
The game was a barnburner, even
though it was delayed by heavy rain and
hail - not exactly typical baseball weather.
In the end✓ Nile gained the victory and the
league championship by a score of 54.
Prior to the final garnet the Six -Shooters
lead the Nile team 2-0 games in the best -of -
five series. However, a determined Nile
team came back to win two straight games .
to force the fifth and deciding game.
The final game went to eight innings and
a key double . by Nile's Stan Dungale
followed by a single by Gary Johnston
gave Nile the narrow victory.
The A championship win was the first in
Nile's five years as a team.
