Many Day Centre events
By Gloria Workman
Do you find that the leaves are falling off
the trees much earlier this year? Does this
mean that winter will be settling soon? Not
a comforting thought for most, especially
for the older adult who doesn't drive a
snowmobile or own a pair of cross-country
skis. For these people winter can seem in-
credibly long. I hear that the winters are
something else in this area.
The Wingham and Area Day Centre for
the Homebound operates all year round
with the help of volunteer drivers who pick
'the seniors up at their front doors. If you
know of someone who may benefit from
the program this winter, please do not
hesitate to call at 35771440. If the person is
interested in the prograin, the staff at the
centre will arrange a referral visit to ex
plain the program and get to know the
possible new client..
What's happening for the month of Oc-
tober? The Grade 11 Family Studies Class
from F.E. Madill Secondary School 'in
Wingham will' be our special guests on
several afternoons this month. The pur-
pose of the visits is to introduce the
students to the day centre and the lives of,
senior citizens in this area. Actually it will
be an educational experience for both
groups. Meeting new people can be an
educational experience in itself.
Hot off the press! The Mystery Bus Trip
will be Tuesday October 14th. As for the
location; I can't tell yeti that. It wouldn't
be a mystery, now wo id it For more in-
formation or the lack o. information please
call the centre.
Foot Clinics will be held Tuesday Oc-
tober 7 and Wednesday October 22nd. This
service is provided .by the Community
Nursing Services for a five dollar fee and
is open to the general public by appoint-
ment only. Please call the centre at least
one day in izlvarice at 357-1440.
We will be attending the Health Fair
(sponsored by the Hurn County Health.
Unit) on October 15 at F,E. Madill Gym-
nasium. This will be an excellent oppoy-
tunny for the seniors to see what's new in
the area of health services.
The Wingham and District Hospital Aux-
iliary will be holding their annual Rum-
mage sale in the armouries building on Oc-
tober 17, therefore there will be NO pro-
gram on October ft in order to allow the
Auxiliary to set up for their sale.
We are fortunate to have Loretta
Devitry, an exchange student from France
(who • attends F.E. Madill) as a guest
speaker on October 23, Lorette is going to,
explain life in France and then open the
way for questions that the seniors may
have. It's always interesting to learn how
people live in different countries.
Everyone is busy preparing for the
Christmas Craft and Bake Sale that will be
held sometime in late November. We have
many interesting projects on the go. If
anyone has any ideas, that they would like
to share with us please come to the Ar-
mouries Monday to Friday 8:30 - 4:30. We
are always looking for new ideas.
I attended a workshop (sponsored by the
Older Adults Centres Association of On-
tario) on Fitness For Seniors. I was so ex-
cited by it that I just had to mention it. The
workshop 'was led by Barbara Rosen
Schreiber of the Joseph E. and Minnie
Wagman Centre for Geriatric Care in
Toronto. Barb has a background in
physical education that she applies to peo-
ple 55 .years and older. She combines
music. with a little dance and a lot of move-
ment to increase the physical fitness levels
of seniors.
One of • the 'main emphasis of the
Workshop was that exercising can be and
should be FUN. We hope to incorporate
some of BarbarA ideas: during the exer-
cise portion of the program here at the cen-
tre. "Successful physical activity can be
exhilirating and is a real. challenge to the
stress of today's lifestyles. With care and
good judgement exercise can help you en-
joy a happier life."
Chapter formed for bright students
At the last meeting of the Bruce' County
Chapter of the Association of Bright'
Children (ABC), Betty McCulloch outlined
the new guidelines- for secondary and
elementary schooling for the gifted.
Parents and teachers in this organization
are trying to meet the needs of the gifted
and thereby give them the opportunity to.
realize their potential as fully as possible:
Who is a Bright Child?.'"A bright child is
one who has potential for unusual accom-
plishment in any of several areas including
intellectual and creative ability, musical,
artistic and athletic performance, social or
leadership skills."
