Department called to area fire
On Monday morning Sept. 15 just after
nine last week the fire whistle sounded. In-
a few minutes the vehicles were headed
north on the 15th out of Ripley. First .was
the water tank truck driven by Chris
Anger, followed bythe fire engine driven
by Doug Martyn with Brian Pollock. The
fire was at the house of Mr. and Mrs. Don
Reid on the Huron -Kincardine boundary
(Huron Twp. side of the road).
On arrival at the scene they immediate-
ly called back to bon Peterbaugh.on"stand-
by at -the firehall to call more firemen to
come out. Responding were Ivan Cook,.
Bob Johnston, Rod MacDonald, Dan Fry,
Wayne Carruthers, Barry Cliffe, Ray
Fuller, Dan MacDonald, and Jaek.Scott.-
Don -Reid -had• added new part to the
older house last summer and it was in this
,new addition the fire broke out. This addi-
tion was "gutted". The older part of the
house was saved but badly damaged by
water and smoke. This was the home of
Bill and Gladys Arnold before they moved
into Ripley. They bought it from Charlie
Shier around fifty years earlier.
Later in the week after writingthe above
account we have learned that Mrs.
Marilyn (Don). Reid had suffered painful
burns to her face, body, arms and hands
and had to be treated at Kincardine
Hospital for them. She rescued some fami-
ly things including photos which could not
be replaced so reported.

New cars being bought
Folks all around here were getting dif-
ferent cars last week. First Mrs. Evelyn
Johnson next door here drove an '84 Ford
L.T.D. sedan on to the boulevard on Mon-
day afternoon Sept. 15. It looked brand
new. Incidentally as we examined .it on
Tuesday morning there was the season's
first ice coating the rear window. Also on.
other side early that same Tuesday morn-
ing we saw Mrs, Marj (Jimmy) Mae-
Tavish driving her brand new Oldsmobile
sedan into the Royal Bank parking lot
brand new - just a 124 km on, the Meter.
