Brian McBurney, the chairman of the board of health for the county,, said the board was set to hire Dr. James Fan, the MOH for the Western Newfoundland Health Unit for the past year. over two other applicants for the position. However, the board recently received a letter from Dr. Fan, stating he was unable to take the jab because of "problems with immigra- tion". The decision to hire Dr. Fan was based upon good recommendations made by the Associate Deputy Minister of the govern- ment of Newfoundland and Labrador, the department of health, and the associate Ennis Murphy new principal at St. Joseph's School St. Joseph's Community School in Kingsbridge has a new principal this year - Mr. Ennis Murphy, transferred to St. Joseph's, from St. Patrick's Separate School in Dublin. A teacher and a principal in the separate school system for 18 years, Mr. Murphy started his teaching career at St. Michael's school in Toronto for five years before becoming the principal at St. Patrick's Separate school in Kinkora. For the past five years, before coming to St. Joseph's, he was the principal at St. Patrick's Separate School in Dublin. Mr. Murphy says lie believes in a team spirit with everyone connected with the - school working together to make the school A better place. 'I'm looking forward to working with the students' and teachers.. Making a good school" involves a team effort of teachers, priest, custodians and secretaries all working together for the betterment of the students," he said. To that end, .Mr. Murphy says he intends tp implement a weekly assembly for the students and teachers to get 'together and communicate about, the school. It will be an opportunity to communi-' cate to oneanother, to talk about .what's going right and -what's going wrong in order to work together -to deal with the situation," he said.' Mr. McBurney said Dr. Fan currently has landed i numigrant status to Canada and is working on a year-to-year basis in Newfoundland. Whe he applied. he assured the board he wo be travelling to Ottawa to "get his pa ers together". However, ha his lette he stated he was unable to obtain the inun- . gration documents. The other applicants for the MOH position will not be looked at in order to fill. the position. said Mr. McBurney, following the meeting on September 4. Mr. McBurney said the board of health will continue to look for a new MOH and hope to have someone in that position by November, or December of this year. One option the board is currently investigating is hiring a fall graduate of the University of Toronto's graduate school of medicine. "We're going to contact the registrar at age .,~a the medical school to seg if he can recommend some of the people graduating in September. We don't have any names as yet." said Mr. Me urnney following the meeting. The position of MOH has been vacant sine former MOH Dr. Harry Ceisler left the position on July 22. citing differences with the county administration as 'the reason for his resignation. In the interim, the county has hired Dr. J. K. McGregor of Wingham as the acting MOH for the county. At the meeting. counciFpassed a motion setting the acting MOH's salary at 51,580 biweekly provided he agrees to a minimum of 14 to 15 hours per week to be spent on Health Unit business.. The salary was effective July 31. So far, the arrangement with an acting MOH has met with positive response by the officials and workers connected with the health unit says, Mr. McBurney. "The acting MOH situation has been working out very well. The directors (of the health unit) are well pleased," he said.
