Funds needed for class size reduction The Ontario Ministry of Education must commit more funds to reduce class sizes in the earliest school years, according to the Federatitn of Women Teachers' Associa- tions of Ontario. A resolution passed last. week at the Annual Meeting of the Federation, .which represents the 32,000 women who teach in public elementary schools, urged. the Ministry to make a strong commitment to primary education. The Federation's cam- paign to reduce class sizes is based on research showing that 'smaller classes are Particularly beneficial in the early grades. Attending the annual meeting from Druce County were Fran Argalis, Christine Irving, Mona MacLean, Joan Wood and Diane Smith. Delegates also heard that school nurses are doing less and classroom teachers and other school staff are doing more to care for • the physical needs of children as a result of budget cuts in the public health sector. The teachers voted to lobby the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education to make surethat adequate health services are provided in the schools. The Federation released a report show- ing that although more women are being promoted to principals since government grants began two years 'ago, more affirm- ative action programmes are still needed. The 'Federation said the affirmative action programmes should be mandatory in all school boards instead ofvoluntary. To back its case for more women principals, tie Federation pointed out that nearly one- third of its 32,000 members have two or more . university degrees and almost two-thirds of them have more than 12 years of teaching' experience. Yet although women make up 68, per cent. of public elementary teachers they make up only 10 per cent of 'principals. •TEESWATER • EX-TOGGERY OPENS \\* FOR THE Fall Season ON Tuesday.
