Anth.or deseribes. ordeal of uncle's pri:t tive operation
We called Dr. Elliot who cane out at
once. He was not successful and called
Dr. Spence, who was not successful
either, It was about 10 p.m. and the
Doctors decided surgery would be nec-
essary. Dr, Elliott phoned Dr. Kennedy,
a good surgeon, in Wingham and
advised that they would be bringing
a patient to the hospital on the morning
train. Kennedy, when he heard the
details, was afraid it would be too late
tommorw. Was there a dining room
table suitable for operating? Was the
road OK? Was a nurse available? An
were answered in the . affirmative. Dr.
Kennedy said. he and Dr. Calder, a
woman doctor, would be there to
operate at midnight.
I phoned Marion MacDiarmid who had
gone to bed.. I asked if she could come at
the request of Dr, Elliott for a. hernia
• operation for my Uncle Malcolm. All
were there on time and the operation
was successful, The fact that Dr. Calder
was there was a major factor in my
sister Anna becoming a doctor.
My father had a very good herd of
cattle to ship to Toronto on Saturday. 1
assumed my father might not want t • be
away leaving Uncle Malcolm in bed. I
had never been to Tironto. I wondered
if it would be helpful if I went along and
saw that the cattle were fed and
watered. I was surprised that both .my
father and Uncle Malcolm thought it
would be a good experience for the boy.
The cattle were loaded in the cattle
cars on Saturday morning. There was no
charge for travelling in the caboose as
far as Palmerston where there was a
passenger car added to the train for the
drovers who were going with the cattle.
My father had the addressand tele -

no trouble finding their h me and had
bed and breakfast Saturday and Sun-
day. They treated my father so well that
I was, glad to know that he had found
such a. good place to stay in Toronto.
When it came time to sell the cattle
on Monday morning, I was unable to get
the price of 6c a pound my father got
two weeks before. When I explained to
the buyer that he had paid more to my
father, he did not go above 5.90 per

To the Editor:
Last Tuesday night, • August 12, we had
an experience : that made us once again
appreciate the courtesy of a small town,..
Leaving our departure for home late, we
weren't aware we were almost out of fuel.
Being 9 p.m. and knowing stations would
be dosed we called Bud Hamilton in

late for a meeting, he was quite willing to
stay, open the extra 20 minutes until we
arrived.
We know that that kind of service is
found : no where but in a small town.
Thanks to Mit. Hamilton and all of you who
would have done the same!
