Good co-operation from farmers
Maitland Valley Conservation Authority
stiff have received good co-operation from
livestock operators in a water quality study
being carried out in the upper Middle
Maitland and Boyle Drain watersheds,
located between Listowel, Milverton and
Brussels.
For, the past two months MVCA staff
have been making on-farm visits to conduct
a survey of manure storage and manage-
ment practices. A water sampling program
is also underway at selected sites in the
area. Information gathered in the study
will be used to gain,a better understanding
of the impact of various livestook. waste
management practices on water quality.
Bob Fuller, a resource technician with
the MVCA, reports that the response of
farmers to the study has been positive.-
• "We've visited about half the farms in
the study area and have received good.co-
operation," said Fuller. •
The farm visits will continue for the
remainder of the summer. une, farm
The farm visits will continue for the
remainder of the summer. In June, farm
operators' in the study area received a letter
from the MVCA regarding the Survey.
, Those who have not yet been visited can
expect to be contacted in the next month.
Fuller explained that the visits also allow
farmers
to gain technical information and
advice.
"We make farmers aware of the various
grant programs available to help fund
improvements to their waste management
systems. The Ontario Soil Conservation
and Environmental Protection Assistance
Program (OSCEPAP) provides partial
'grants for improvements," noted Fuller.
"The Authority is stressing practical and
cost-effective methods of controlling pollu-
tion," said Fuller. "But improvements can
only be made if farmers take the intiative."
