Last Wednesday morning, with his grandmother Vivian Hogan waiting anxi- ously, Todd appeared over the horizon flying a Hughes 300 helicopter and after a few circle's around the Ashfield Township farm, he completed a perfect, feather - touch landing in the backyard'. •Hourlong flight For Todd, a 19 -year-old Glencoe resid- ent, who is the son of Kerry and Diane Hogan, formerly of this area, the hourlong flight from St Thomas was another step closer to receiving his full helicopter licenSe. Currently„he is in.his last 10 hours of 40 hoursworth of solo time needed to complete the training. For the past four months, he has been taking the Commercial Helicopter Course through the Ontario Ministry of Transpor- tation and Communication in St. Thomas. However, the course which consists o1 both ground school and flight time is not cheap, costing $18,500. In the ground school portion of the training, Todd says it focusses fm machine operation, aerodynamics and weather charting which he describes as:the-biggest part a the course. '"You have to know what tyou're flying into." • . In the beginning of his "in air'? training he said the helicopter was a little difficult to get used to. A lot of co-ordinatfon is needed to operate the "sticks" in the helicopter. ' • "It's fun"' ,‘ "For the first 19 hourst wasVonering what f Was doing. It's a bit hard off the start, but once you get the hang„ of it, it's - fun. With a plane, once you get it nip in the air, it can almost fly itself, but in a helicopter you're flying it all the time and reading a map at the same time." he said. Lucknow Reeve Herb Clark said the bad water samples discoveredjn the village's water 'supply on July 25 could have been caused by the drop in the water levels at the standpipe in order for it to be cleaned.. Since the standpipe is routinely cleaned every seven years, the drop hi the levels . may have ,stirred the sediments which • collect at the bottom. "We think it was a result of when we • were planning to drain and clean the standpipe. The company called and they said they were tied up• with another contract and were unable to clean and re -grease the standpipe. We think this could have contributed a eertain amount (to the bad satnples)," said Mr. 'Clark. On Friday, August 1, the boil water order issued by the Bruce County medical officer of health was lifted after extensive test g carried out earlier in the week revealed the contamination had been cleared. Contaminated water was found in the downtown area of Lucknow on July 25 coliform, bacterias commonly found in polluted water. The boil water order stayed • in effect for a week. until chlorine was pumped through the entire system. Spokesmen with both the. Ministry of the Environment and the Bruce County Health Unit have said no concrete source for the contamination has been found. However, both agree a,cross.connection, where water backs up into the system from an outlet such as a sink, may have been the cause. Mr. Clark said the standpipe will be drained on Sunday, August 10 with the cleaning and re -greasing to commence on August 11. Houses in Lucknow will get their. water supply directly iron the wells with the chlorination system to be • in use throughout 'the cleaning procedure. How- ever, the chlorinating system, hooked up on one of the village's two wells will be discontinued after the standpipe is- clean- ed. "Once it's cleaned,. there shouldn't be, anything to rile up the water. If there is, we'll start the chlorinators up again. But, we don't see the need to keep on.vvith it (using the chlorinators)," he said. • • The public response to tne water con- tamination was minimal, said Mr. • Clark• , with most of the people being vi/ell informed of the situation. • "There was really no reaction. The people knew that we had a bad test and that we were trying to keep them informed. We tried to correct the problem as soon as “possible."
