Unique crafts at festival
• Everyone visiting the Lucknow. Craft
Festival over the weekend was sure to
notice the diversity of the handiuvvork on -
display, ••
Many of the more well known and
recognizeable crafts were represented at
the Festival as well as some crafts which
were a little out of the ordinary• °
One of the more distinctive kinds of
crafts was called hand silk painting which
were displayed by Amelie Koning of
Toronto,
The art form involves French dye which
is painted right on to the silk, said Mrs.
Koning who also had a booth at the
Festival last year, The silk i then steamed ,
for over an hour. This will then set the dye
into the fibres of the silk which can be used
to make clothing.
"It's getting more and more popular
It's often called the 'wearable art' as -each
one is an original, one of a kind" she said.
She has been involved in making hand
silk paintings for 10 years and sells some of
her products to boutiques it Toronte, She
says the art shows have given her a chance
to travel, So far this year, she has also
visited Craft Festivals in Sauble Beach,
Kincardine and Goderich.
Also operating a booth at the Craft
Festival were MaryPicketof Puslinch and
Maureen Jefferson of Guelph who display-
ed a number of handmade knitted goods.
The first-time visitors to the Lucknow
Craft Festivals, said they began travelling
to shows in the area two years as an outlet
for some of the woolen goods from a
knitting group which met in Guelph.
"We were knitting all these things, but
we didn't have any place for them to go. So
we thought we'd go to some (craft) shows
and to the malls to sell some things," said
Mrs. Picket
• So far, the.shows have given the pair a
chance to see some of the other crafts and
see some of the other knitted goods, on
hand. But, most of all, they travel to the
shows for enjoyment.
"We don't make a lot of money out of it,
so you pretty well have to do it for the
enjoyment," said Mrs. Picket
