.a
Earliest recollection of log house
I was born on .November 25, 1900 on lot 8
concession 2, Kinloss township, Bruce
:County. My earliest recollectionis about
moving from the log house in which I was
born to a big brick house on' a farm we had
bought across the road on the North half of
lots 67 and 68.
My mother was taking my sisters in the
buggy while I wanted to travel with my
father in the wagon with the furniture. My
favourite white cat was content on my
knees till the wagon started when the cat
jumped down. I cried and all was well when
my father caught the cat, put it in a box and
I had the box with the cat inside,
My father's elder sister when she was 80
gave .me information about the first
sutlers, She remembered conversations
between her parents, my grandparents, in
the winter of 1861. They had left Skye in
Scotland and came to Canada in 1851.
Grandma was '•happy they left :Scotland.
They could never have abig house of their
own in Scotland. Five .children had been
born, an well and healthy. Another baby
was expected and there were problems.
The nearest doctor was at Goderich about
25 miles away. Only one settler had a
horse, David Henderson had the only horse
so he went to Goderich and waited to bring
the Doctor who could not have found ,the
place. My aunt remembered the Doctor
shaking has head and saying, "It is too date.
VI could have been here 24 hours earlier it
might have been different.' She died, It
was on December 8, 1861. There were no
undertakers. hearses, nor more than one •
horse in the district, Oneof the neighbours
made a suitable coffin. The cemetery was
about h mile away, About 5,0 men formed

two ,lines so that four men would carry the
coffin for about 200 yards when four others
would take their place and they would drop
to the back of the line.
T hat, would not be a Merry Christmas for
the Nicholson family in 1861 when,
Margaret the eldest,, would only be nine
years old,
On May 17; '1903 xny mother Isabel
MacDonald Nicholson died, She had been
born on September 18, 1861 on lot 3,
concession 4, Kinloss to !nship. I remem-
ber
being taken with my older sister
Norma, who was two years older than I, to
sed our mother.
I also remember the Funeral. It was the
customat that time to have two horse-
drawn vehicles, one to take the; pallbearers
and the .other the family, from the house to
the cemetery and home again, It was also
the custom for all to remain until all the
earth was put back in the hole. I remember
I was restless and got out to see where all
the earth was going. A lot were crying.
Mrs. Ross, a very kind neighbour, patted
my head as she cried saying "poor little
fellow".
The death certificate gave brain hemorr-
hage as the cause of death. Her death, came
as .a surprise for all as she always looked
andwas well.

Fight for justice continues
To the Editor:
As parents, of murdered children, we
were, appalled when Clifford Olson was
allowed to profit from the deaths of our
children. We were further horrified when a
British Colbumia Appeal Court returned
the money to him after we had successfully
fought a long battle to have the money
taken from him.
The fight to recover the money from
Olson has been costly and we sincerely
appreciate the support we have received
from many across Canada. The people of
I,ucknow have been extremely generous in
their support, and we wish to thank the
people in i,ucknow who have sent in dona.
tions to assist us in our fight for justice.
Our appeal to have our case heard by the
Supreme Court of Canada was heard by the
Supreme Court on June 23 and'a decision is
expected later this summer. Hopefully, the
Supreme Court will hems our ease, and if
we win. it will set a precedent in that child
