Dave Crovetto, a 17 -year-old student from Kitchener. -Waterloo, is getting his first taste of farming- on the Leo Miltenburg farm while participating in the Junior Agriculturalist program sponsored by OMAF. Driving the tractors and learning about the various farm i inplements are his favorite farm duties. [Man Rivett photo]. City youth farming f summer By Alan Rivett This summer, Dave Crovetto, abandoned big. citylife to experience the sweat of working ina hayfield and the smell of shovelling manure while working on a farm. Dave, a 17 -year-old Kitchener -Waterloo highschool student is part of this year's. crop of youths who have left the city for the summer to experience the farm way of life under the Junior Agriculturalists program. sponsored by OMAF. Dave is working for the summer at the Leo Miltenburg farm at RR 7 Lucknow. e Number of jobs In his third week at the Miltenburg farm, Dave says he has been handling a number of jobs on the farm, everything from doing the morning chores to haying to painting. Since it's his first time working on a farm, there were a number , of misconceptions about farming which were promptly dispel- led. "I didn't think haying would be so hard and strenuous. And shovelling manure - I thought it would be quick, but it seems to go on forever. It isn't just a few shovelfuls. I didn't think doing the chores would take as long as it does," said Dave, who found out about the Junior Agricultural Program at a Canada Manpower Centre, in the city. The day begins at about 5:34 a.m. with the milking of the cattle and the doing of the chores, said Dave, adding that he's now starting' to get used to rising at an early hour. For the chores, which take five to six hours, he usually takes care of the feeding of the cows and heifers. While he's enjoying and finding the dairy chores to be exciting, he said in time they could begin to get boring. Chores exciting "Chores are exciting to do, but it's something that you have to do every day. They're kind of a setback because you want to learn more, but you can't do anything else until the chores are done," said Dave, who has always wanted to try farm work. So far, Dave says he has been adapting FEATURE axony ocour2.9 9/ CONTRACT SALES & INSTALLATION Broadloom • Linoleums • Ceramics • Cabinets • Windows 6ungannon 529-3147 OR Greg Hamilton 528-3946 l'k P•tilin' l N ; ,• '''`.... t to farming., rather, well, ..with driving the tractor and learning about the various farm implements the most enjoyable part of farm. living. However, the learning process has not been without a few mishaps.. "Leo told .ane to get the rake and take it (to the back of the farm). I thought I knew how to' take it back,, but I. didn't know to lift the blade up so it wouldn't cut the gravel. About half way down the lane I found out I was doing it wrong. I felt pretty stupid. Everybody had a good chue de, anyways," he said. ° Mr. Miltenburg, a first-time participant in the "Junior Aggie" program, says the arrangement with Dave has been working "pretty well". However, the original youth slated to work at the farm was less than enamoured with farm work. "We had him for four days and he didn't like it. He didn't want to work. He had no idea how to use even the simplest tool like a hammer. You might as well have given him a fry pan .instead," he said. Responsibility" He said he has found the program useful in giving young people a sense of respon- sibility, common sense and a feel of how to do things. "It's a real good chance for the younger people from the city to see what's up. The older people in the city imay have a brother in the country, but the younger kids are `total city', They never spend much time in the country," he said. Dave says he likes the country living and the farming, but he's too oriented to city life ever to consider living on a farm frill time, "I guess 1 could put up with it, bu. 1 couldn't live withit for very long a 1 wissl 1 could, live the solitary life of a farmer. Now that I'm born and raised in the city, 1 don't think I could adapt to this kind of solitary life," he said. - The Man To See I's r`INTEE i CO.
