OPP launch weekend campaign :.
The "Strict is Fair" policy of highway
traffic enforcement -is still in 'effect, with
Ontario Provincial Police officers concen-
trating on impaired driving, excessive
speed and seat belt use during the coming
Civic Holiday weekend.
The August 4 Civic Holiday weekend
marks the ' ht of the summer vacation
season - a time when cottage country traffic
reaches its peak density.
Impaired driving and excessive speed
ue to be the major contributors to
1 collisions on the province's highways,
total of 19 people :died as a result of 11
fatal motor vehicle accidents, on roadways
patrolled by the OPP, during the 1985 Civic
Holiday weekend.
In contrast, not a single life was lost on
Ontario roads patrolled by the OPP during
this year's July 1 Canada Day holiday.
"The `Strict is Fair' campaign is the
most effective means we have to make the
corning Civic Holiday weekend as safe as
possible for the travelling ' public," said
OPP Commissioner Archie Ferguson.
In a bid to save lives, the OPP R.I.D.E.
Program and radar units will be used to full
effect, and officers will place special atten-
tion on the use of seat belts..

for a five-day stay last week, saidthey will
be sight-seeing in ,the area as well as soine

until more testing completed

An order to boil water before drinking
will remain in effect until at least this
weekend until the Bruce County Health
Unit can find the source of contaminated
water in the Lucknow system, said a ,
spokesman with the health unit.
Harold Ranking, the director of water
inspection with the health unit,: told the
Sentinel Monday (July 28) that extensive
testing, especially in the downtown area
where the contaminated water was origin-
ally detected, will be carried out with.
results expected to be known by Wednes-
day (July 30). In the interim, the Ministry
of the Environment will hook up a
chlorination system to flush the water lines
in' the village.
"The order to boil water will remain
indefinitely until we get the test results
back. By Wednesday, we will be making a
decision, Hopefully, we'll be removing the
boil water order by the weekend," said Mr.
Ranking.
Be'said the decision to place a boil water
throughout Lucknow was authorized by
:Bruce County Medical Officer of Health
Dr. McPherson after three of a total of
eight routine water samples taken in
Lucknow last Thursday -and Friday reveal-
ed a low fecal and total coliform count, a
bacteria found in contaminated water.
"If it had of been just coliforms; we
would have just re -sampled the water. But,
with fecals, we don't want to take a chance,
Although they're very slight, the fact that
they exist is enough to place a boil water
order," he said.
As for cause of the contaminated water,
Mr. Ranking said it could be the result of
dirt and Muck entering the water lines after
repairs to the water lh a or a cross -connec-
tion in the water lines. However, more
specific information into: the situation
won't be known until the results of the
extensive testing now underway are
