Blyth Festival play Gone to Glory. The comedy written_ by British Columbia playwright Suzanne Finlay opened at the Festival on July 15. [James Hockings photo] Festival play Gone. to Glory both humorous and sad By Alan Rivett It was a laugh a minute for .the audience who took in Gone to Glory at the Blyth Festival. But, the underlying message of the play was anything but funny. Gone to Glory, wirtten. by British Colm- bia playwright Suzanne Finlay, which opened at the theatre on July 15,,was almost like watching a theatre version of TV's The Golden Girls with their character- istic geritol-set wit permeating throughout. In the Blyth production, the "golden girls" are Winnie (played by Margaret Barton), an old, dottering spinster with a razor-sharp wit, and Lulu (played by Araby Lockhart), an ever -optimistic senior who goes to great lengths to care for her -ailing- siser, Grinding poverty What becomes distressingly apparent over and above the relentless one-liners, the funny quirks and Winnie's hilarious bathrom humor, is the grinding povery the two old ladies have to contend with. Living in a rustic, one -room cabin in the interior of B.C., the two seniors are barely managing to subsist with ken -L -ration sometimes being the only food between • them and starvation. The misery is suddenly compounded by the arrival of a new landlord. a dim-witted divorcee named Gooeie, (played by Anne Anglin), who plans to sell thecabin in 10 A.M. 10 A.M. 10 A.M. 10.
