Colborne Central School, serves the entire township • At the beginning it was called Zion School, not because the name was unique, but because it was built on the site of Zion church, which had been torn down ' and hauled away. The two rooms built in 1957 grew to four rooms in 1959, and finally in 1967, the year of Canada's one hundredth birthday, it was enlarged to eight rooms and a gymnasium, with an enrolment of • 233 pupils. • The 'name Colborne Central School ap- peared on the planter at the base of the flagpole, signifying that one school now served all the children in the township. The school flag was tutfurled for the first time on the birthday of Sir John A. Macdonald. Benmiller school with its abundance of shady maples at the familiar fork in the road that winds down through the quaint scenic village of the same name, went into the hands of the Benmiller lodge, who com- mitted themselves to.mahttain the grounds as a ball park and recreation area, the two -room Saltford school on the banks of the Maitland River three-quarters of a mile from its mouth and overlooking the new highway bridge was purchased by the Machinists' union as a clubroom to serve its members and the community; and Nile ' school, famous for the.excellent quality of • its water was purchased privately. The township's last three schools were schools no longer. . It would be reasonable to assume that with such a history of additions, the finish- ed product would be rather hodge-podge but, contrary to this reasoning, it is a well- • arranged, building. The junior school is separated from the senior school by the up- to-date gymnasium, picturesque Cour- tyard and columned service platform. Pupil and parent alike can be justly proud of Colborne Central. The lovely row of maples along the west side has been supplemented by new plan- tings. In the courtyard the flowering crabs and the golden foliage of forsythia will be a genuine delight in the springtimes of the years ahead. There no longer is the sound of sleigh bells as the fath9ron his way home from the sugar bush stops his old four -runner sleigh to pick ,up the children walking home. Now sixty -five -passenger buses are daily on the job. The old box stove has been replaced by the central heating plant, and the hand pump has become a pressure chinking fountain.
