HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1986-07-16, Page 67In UM, Michael Fisher, while exploring
the land along the Maitland River,
scovered the creek on the Colborne sidle
of the river, and found that it issued from a
monstrous spring. lie was impressed both
with the water privileges and the land in
its locality. Michael purchased a block of
land (5435 acres) from . e Canada Com
pany the next year. This land is fuglie bend
of the river and, is the full length of the
Maitland Concession, north and south, also
the f length of concession 1 and 2, east
and west. In 1831, he moved his wife and
family from Vaughan Township to this
5485 acres of land in Colborne. Their home
being the rudest of log cabins.
Michael Fisher was very proud of his
large family, seven sons and three
daughters. In those days, a man with a
large family was considered a very rich
man. In 1836, five years after xnoving to •
Colborne, the Fisher family built a large
three-storey stone house. This house was
built of oak timbers, faced and built with
limestone about 2-','2 feet thick, afterwards
faced with rough cast.
Valentine, the fifth child, at the age of 9
years split the 'shingles while his father
shaved them for the new home. The
shingles were split 2-1/2 feet long and -about
1/2 inch thick, and were laid around seven
inches to the weather, on sheeting four in-
ches thick and were placed some five in-
ches apart on the rafters.
A great deal of the material for the house
and some of their machinery was brought'
from York, although, it is not known what
was the means of transportation.
The first sawmill was built on this
monster spring which today is still :flowing
strongly on its -way to the Maitland River.
The remains of its dam, that created a
head of fifteen feet are still to be seen.
This Michael Fisher was a handy man
and was known to have seven trades.. He
had a small furniture factory built on this•
property.
Some years later he traded the first
farm that he settled on, now known as
Cherrydale, and a farm on the Maitland.
Concession known as the Wise farm, to
Henry Martin for a chopping mill, flour
mill, sawmill and 40 acres of land in
Vaughan Township in York County. Henry
Martin eventually sold theoriginal farm to
Mr. J. C. LeTouzel.
It was Mr. LeTouzel who named the
farm Cherrydale.
Michael, Fisher had faith in God. He
shared with his family in bible reading and
had prayers every morning, They felt it a
necessity.
In. 1986, Cherrydale celebrates its ses-
quicentennial along with Colborne
Township.
