"Haying fire" discovered at Allan Farrell farm

Last week on Tuesday Ji 'y 8 at 4 p.m. the
Ripley Fire Whistle was blowing for sthe
time in this 1986 summer season - the first
time in weeks. It was a "Haying Fire" and it
was at one of the Allan Farrell farms, the
one oh the north side of the road across from
his home farm. On the nice afternoon they
were baling hay there when the baler caught
fire, Besides the damage to the machine, the
fire burned at least one large bale, so they
said.
Enlarged his paper route
Greg McCallum, son of Neil and Sandy
McCallum of Park Street has enlarged his
Star paper route recently in the north end of
Ripley. For a long time these customers in
the. north end here received their Stars from
Debbie Taylor of William Street, then after
Debbie it was. Shawn Stanley, son of Del and
Jewel Stanley, Queen Street east end.
Top sales of cattle
Each Friday evening between : five thirty
and six o'clock the Wingham rt"io CKNX
carries a weekly report from the Ontario
Livestock yards in Toronto, listing top sales
for shipments of cattle made in western On-
tario
during, the past week.
Last Friday drover Allan Coiling just east
of Ripley was named right at the start. for
his shipment of a big cow over 1300 lbs.
belonging to Dan MacDonald on the 8th con-
cession halfway between- Ripley and Pine
River.
Visited with Ab Wylds •
Visiting here with Ab Wylds last Tuesday
July 8 were Alf and Dorothy Beal in the
afternoon on their way 'home to Stratford
after a week stay at their cottage at In-
verhuron and attending the funeral of Les,
Shipp of Millarton, and in the evening it was
Elmer and Gladys Wylds of Kincardine.

fields. Later on both afternoons wagon loads
of square bales of haycoining from the 15th
north passed straight south through Ripley;

Mike Courtney of the second' concession
west of the Bluewater Highwaywas taking
his hay 'crop: home from the Don and Alma
Gillies' farm at the corner of the 15th and
10th concession. Mike now has this. farm;
His father Bob Courtney now of Point. Clark
would be helping him.
Recent visitors in Ripley
Recent visitors with the Irwin families
were Brent and Pat Dane,- Catherine and
Lillian from Beaver Lodge in Northern
Alberta. Brent's mother was Kathleen Irwin
of Hurontownship.
Happy Hearts enjoyed picnic'
The Ripley Happy Hearts Club enjoyed a
picnic on July 11 at the Pollock picnic
grounds at Bruce Beaeh. They were
welcomed by Margaret and Norval Pollock.
Everyone enjoyed a tasty dinner and the
afternoon: was spent visiting, playing,
games, or walking on the beach, The presi-
dent
resi .dent Clarence Hedley expressed thanks to
Norval and Margaret Pollock for their, kind-

happy young couple. Both were hired by the

Top Canadian citizens
Two weeks age it was Tuesday July 1;1986
and it was a special holiday in the week and -
net on ai weekend. Earlier :school students
were asked to write about a Canadian who
they would be proud to be when they grow
up. These were graded and the top three
were printed in the 'locally distributed
"FOCUS". The top three prizes were award-
ed as follows - first prize to Jacob Peterson
writing on "Alexander Graham Bell", se-
cond prize to Donna Bonnett on her mother
Mrs. Ruby Bonnett, and third prize to Sara
Haldenby on Dr. Mel Corrin of Lucknow.

Donna and Sara were both Grade 8
students at the Kinloss Central School at
Holyrood and they are both on RRI,.
Holyrood NOG 2B0 in Kinloss township. Sara
wrote - "Dr., Corrin delivered me and mom
said he did a good job."
Donna Bonnett, daughter of Robert and
Ruby Bonnett of Con. 10, Kinloss wrote
about her mother Ruby as follows - "The
famous Canadian I chose is my mother. My
mother was a nurse that everybody loved.
Shenow works for the Red Cross Homemak-
ing Service. She is still loved by many peo-
ple. I am very proud to have a mother that
was a nurse and cared for so many sick pa-
tients and I hope l can grow up anti be a kind

Craft show this weekend
This coming weekend Friday to Sunday,
July 18, 19 and 20 will be a time of activity at
the Ripley Huron Community Centre Com-
plex. The Ripley, Craft Show starts. on Fri-
day morning and goes through to Saturday
supper time.
